Sing Like a Star - Diane Hall
Introduction
Every young girl or boy dreams of what they would like to do when they’re all grown up and, if you’re reading this introduction, your own wish for the future was probably to be a renowned singer. It’s never too late to make your dreams come true; within this book, you will find out how to become a professional standard singer.
Whether you prefer pop, jazz, rock or opera, the basic techniques that every singer must know are always the same. Whatever you want to do with your singing talent, this book will help you hone your tones to perfection. You’ll be ready to head to auditions, impress record label representatives and sing on the stage or in a recording studio.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly hobby, why not consider one of the oldest and still most popular on the planet? Of all the pastimes that are out there for you to choose from, singing not only requires one of the lowest initial investments, because there is so little equipment to be purchased, but is endlessly enjoyable both on your own and in the company of others.
This book will help you develop your skills and push your talent to become the singer people want to listen to, whether you’re just starting out or looking for a way to improve beyond the basics. If you follow the guidance from start to finish, it can also help you become a singer worthy of winning auditions on the stage or perhaps even with a record company.
Every singer must begin somewhere, and your journey starts right here. If you have no professional or trained singing experience, start with the first chapter and work your way through the book. If you do, I recommend reviewing those chapters anyway to ensure you’re doing things right.
We’ll start out by taking a look at the role your body plays in your singing – believe it or not, it’s just as important to stand the right way and breathe correctly as it is to practice your scales. We’ll perfect your posture, show you how to use your whole body to power your voice and help you find the right posture for the notes to ring clear from your mouth. Then, and only then, will we start thinking about stringing those notes together.
What Kind of a Singer Are You?
Singers generally fall into one of four main categories, although those with the widest ranges can often find themselves spanning more than one. As you begin exploring your singing potential, it’s natural to want to know which of these categories you fall into – so let’s find out. If you audition for a singing role, this is information you’ll be asked for right away.
Your voice type is about more than just how high or low a note you are able to sing. The four main categories of singer, from highest to lowest, are:
Soprano
Mezzo-soprano (or just mezzo)
Tenor
Bass.
Female singers tend to fall into the first two categories, while male singers err towards the third and fourth. Five distinct ingredients make up your voice type and help to classify which of the four categories you fall into:
• Your Age: Your voice will continue to grow as you do, even past adolescence into adulthood. That’s why it’s so easy to guess a person’s age just by listening to their voice.
• Your Register: A register is a series of notes that sound similar and are produced by the same set of muscles, which means that they will vibrate at the same location within your body. How you transition between these registers contributes to determining what type of voice you have.
• Your Range: Put simply, your range incorporates every single note you are able to hit with your voice, from the very highest to the absolute lowest. The more you practice, the more notes you will be able to hit because you will be exercising and stretching your singing muscles. Much like a weightlifter can lift heavier weights with training, you will be able to use your voice for a wider range of notes. Your singing style, however, will be determined largely by the range of notes that are most comfortable for you to sing.
• Your Strength: We’ll look more closely at voice strength in a later chapter. For now, it’s enough to mention that your voice style is partly determined by where on the scale of notes your singing is at its strongest.
• Your
