Gemma opened the refrigerator door and sighed loudly. There was nothing to eat, apart from a mouldy piece of cheese, and she would have to wait until Friday before she got paid. It was her useless husband’s fault. She and Terry both lived on state benefits, but whilst she was quite prepared to live within their means, he was constantly wasting money on drink and drugs. They didn’t have any kids yet, luckily, but her friends and relatives kept asking them when they were going to start a family of their own.

Gemma was in no rush to. She lived in a scummy little council flat with her husband of five years and couldn’t see that situation changing.
