Chapter 1

I feel God awful, the ocean is making my stomach heave and I’m sweating floods. The air makes it a little better but I still don’t know how I’m going to survive the next four days until we reach Puerto Rico.

I’m on board the Avenger, a 110 foot motor yacht, a floating mansion of luxury and splendor. We left Panama late last night and I haven’t had a chance to explore her yet, but as soon as I feel better I will. It’s only four of us, Captain Rasmus, the Engineer Kelly, a Stewart named Steve and myself. I’m a Steward to, or as Steve likes to call me Trainee Steward.

It’s the middle of May and we are going to Valencia to pick up the owner of the yacht and his family. They are doing a European tour and will finish off with a cruise to the Balearic Islands.

I have spent the last months back home in Oklahoma with my grandparents. After the ordeal with Andre and his friends, I needed to be around some normal people. It was nice seeing my grandparents again, and of course they were happy to see their little Nat again. It had been almost six months since I left their farm.

I met with Captain Rasmus, a Norwegian man in his late fifties in Panama City before I went back to Oklahoma. He looks the typical sea captain, big red beard, wears a Captains hat and smokes a pipe. We hit it off and after some questions about my previous work experience he offered me the job as Stewart and I accepted. The yacht was in dry dock at the time, so it gave me time to fly home for a few months.

‘Nat, how are you feeling?’

I turn my head slowly and see Steve walking across the Teak deck towards me.

‘I feel like shit and a half.’

‘I brought you these,’ he hands me two small pills.

‘What are they?’

‘Sea sickness pills, they will make you feel much better in an hour or so.’

‘Thanks, I’m going to the cabin to lie down for a while.’

‘No you are not, it will make you feel worse. Stay on deck and watch the horizon, here I brought you some water as well.’

He gives me a small plastic bottle of water and I take the pills with big gulps from the bottle.

Steve and I share a cabin, the Captain has his own and so does the Engineer, which is fine, Steve is cool, and has a good body. His tan is amazing, he always works in shorts since the owner is not here, and once they are on board we all have to wear uniforms.

‘You might want to put a t shirt on Nat you are getting pink.’

I look at my arms and he is right. I have been wearing a bikini and forgot to put on sun lotion.

‘Thanks, I’ll get one, wait here a minute.’

‘I should have let you burn, now you will cover up those boobs of yours,’ he says with a grin.

‘See, that’s what you get for being a good guy.’

I walk away trying to look sexy, but I’m so dizzy I almost trip over my feet.

‘Careful Nat,’ I hear him call after me.

In our cabin I find a t shirt in a drawer
