Chapter 1

The beginning of the fall semester was my favourite part of the school year. I sat on the deck to the small house, my roommate Justin and I rented and from there I watched the women walk past to the administration office. The house was on the other side of the street from the university and off campus. That meant that we could drink our beers and smoke our cigarettes in peace and quiet.

On the bottom floor was the kitchen and a living room. Upstairs, two bedrooms and one bathroom. I had the bedroom facing the street and the university campus. Justin’s was facing the backyard and the so called forest. It’s about a hundred trees bunched together, but everyone calls it a forest.

I was sitting in my favourite rocking chair with my feet up on a small table and enjoying my third beer of the afternoon when Justin came in through the gate. Looking up at me he said, any beers left?
