    CHAPTER ONE - Introduction

If you are reading this book right now, you are probably sick. Your illness may be of long or short duration, may consist of painful boils or throbbing aches, or may simply be life-sapping cancer. Whatever it is, your health is not what you would like, and in most cases not what it once was. You need help and may feel desperate. You just want to feel better. After all, being sick is no fun at all. You're willing to try just about anything to overcome it.

Congratulations. You are now in a humbled condition, ready to learn some of the deeper and more meaningful secrets of life and living that are often never learned or realized by the healthy. Sickness is your ticket to wisdom. But while I issue this hearty congratulations, I must also issue a warning. The way to achieve improved health as described in this book will require a different kind of pain and discomfort than you are used to. What you will be facing, if you are willing to change your health for the better, will be emotional and psychological discomfort and pain. You may find yourself contending with the pain of how others have treated you in the past, your own remorse, a lack of forgiveness, or unresolved frustration. You will have to squarely face your feelings of rejection, inadequacy, anger, guilt and shame. As you work your way through the procedures and techniques described in this book you are likely to feel many if not all of these things, and to feel them very intensely. It is not a journey for the faint hearted. Indeed, if you were not suffering so much physically, you likely would not engage in such a journey at all. And even many of those who suffer physically are not able to handle this different kind of pain. They would rather remain ill.

But engage in it you must if you really wish to be free. It is the only way. For every question there is an answer, and for every effect there is a cause. The cause of cancer is not cell reproduction gone mad as many suppose but is something else entirely. The cause of so-called 'viral diseases' is not viruses as many suppose but is something else entirely. Indeed, the cause of most if not all ailments is different than what the majority of people suppose. The cause of such conditions is solely found in the mind and heart, not in the physical world. It would be impossible for it to be any other way.

I am now quite certain that many who started this volume have already stopped, usually with a snort of derision and a comment like this: I knew it! Another one of those crackpots who thinks all health problems are in people's heads! He's off his nut! How can sickness not be related to viruses when all those doctors and scientists believe otherwise? And anyway, the agony I'm feeling in my joints right now isn't mental! I'm feeling it, and it hurts like sixty! The nerve of that guy to spout such nonsense!

Let me assure you of two important things: First, the physical pain you are experiencing is indeed real, and I would never want to deny that, or make light of it. Second however, in order to achieve a healing you must come at some point to accept and believe that what I 'spouted' is not nonsense, and that the deep down cause of your ailment (and therefore your pain) is indeed found solely within your mind and heart. Viruses are not causes as so many suppose but part of the symptoms, since viruses are easily cast off by healthy bodied people. You will better understand what I mean by this as you continue reading.

Many people may think that what I just said--that your illness is real, but originates in your mind and heart--is contradictory. But it is not a contradiction. You are not imagining your pain. It is real. Anyone who thinks your suffering is all in your head is daft, and should have their own head examined. But what initially caused and brought about your ailment was not something physical. What caused it was something in your mind and heart, and almost certainly something of long duration. If you deal appropriately with that inner cause, the very real physical pain and symptoms will gradually fade away like mist before the sun. This will usually not happen instantly, but it will happen eventually if these techniques are faithfully followed.

By now you may be starting to catch the drift of what I am saying. A belief in our minds and hearts can bring about a very real physical condition or ailment. These conditions are known in the medical profession by a large variety of names, such as cancer, kidney infection, viral infections, heart disease, influenza, ulcers, multiple sclerosis, etc., etc. These illnesses can include discomfort, pain and even agony. However, it was the initial belief in the mind and heart that was the real cause. The effect or result of that cause were the symptoms that fit the definition of a named disease. You cannot fully overcome the symptoms and therefore the disease without first dealing with what caused it. Drugs treat symptoms. So do radiation treatments. This book is not about treating symptoms. It is about treating and resolving causes. When that occurs, the symptoms will go away.

A simple example will illustrate what I mean. This example cannot be denied by anyone who considers himself sane, because it has been scientifically proven and observed. The example is hypnotism. A hypnotized person can be told that he has just had a bucket of ice water dashed over his head and he will feel it. His belief (cause) brought about the consequence (effect) of a physical sensation of discomfort and shivering. Likewise if he is told there are hundreds of fire ants crawling
