    Chapter 1

Ho there, Professor Sedric. Are you leaving so soon? Skrimshaw's fat feet in their flat-soled shoes slapped loudly on the flagstones as he waddled his bulk faster down the corridor, his puffy red face shiny in the gaslight.

Damn the gods, Sedric muttered, but as he turned to face Skrimshaw a smooth smile fronted his handsome face; it wasn't his friend he was annoyed with. Yes, you old windbag, I'm leaving right now. I have some important experiments in my castle laboratory that require my personal attention at precise intervals. And you? Surely you are staying for the dinner. He raised one bushy white eyebrow at his chubby friend.

Huff. Well, I did consider it, But I really don't need any more large dinners, do I? He patted his ample gut. I was in a bit of a hurry to get on the road before the weather got too bad. It looked like an awful storm brewing in the southwest this afternoon.

A sound policy indeed, but I'm afraid you are already too late to avoid getting wet. Sedric pushed open the door to the courtyard and the sound of heavy rain splashing on the slate cobbles washed into the room on a blast of cold, wet air.

True, too true. As they stepped outside Skrimshaw shivered and pulled his cloak tighter around his shoulders and across his stomach. Although they were protected by an overhanging balcony gusts of wind whipped the rain into their faces. A sheet of lightning lit the black sky for an instant and they were still blinking away afterimages when the thunder clapped them. While their ears rang the rain increased twofold, spattering down in sheets and swirling into the storm drains.

Perhaps, Skrimshaw said, I'll stay here at the University tonight.
