What to Call Yourself
Are you an outsider? A maker of Ars Brut? An Autodidactic?
Well, guess what—you are all of the above. Personally, I prefer the adjective self-taught.
It’s simple, yet succinct.
Some art writers and critics are of the opinion that if an artist has no formal education he or she should not be considered a true member
of the art world’s elite. Hogwash, I say.
Success and acceptance are the result of more than formal education, belonging to the right cliques, and showing your work in the best places. To be a successful artist, you must have more than talent, more than education, and more than friends in high places. You must be driven to create and determined to make a living doing it. Even the most highly skilled master artist will not have a successful career if he is not willing to learn the basics of the art business and how to market himself and his
