Try your hand at abstract painting

Abstract painting simply invites you to paint. It is not subject to strict rules and constraints, but for many people this does not mean that it is easier. Quite the opposite, in fact; it can often be more difficult to develop your painting without guidelines. You might ask yourself: ‘Where do I even start, and when do I stop?’ or ‘How do I create liveliness in my painting?’ Abstract painting also offers you the opportunity to paint with the most diverse tools. There are techniques to help you find your own expression. You might discover materials that you can effortlessly apply, or develop colour mixtures that make your painting shine.

Subject and expression

It is not only the composition of the picture, with its perspective and the division of your painting space, that plays a role in making your picture look harmonious and complete. It also needs expression. Technique helps you with this. It gives your picture a style. Let your picture tell a story and build it up like a novel. There is an introduction, a main part and a climax in your picture. The introduction is there to give you a gateway to painting; making the first marks on the white canvas. The main part is made up of many layers, textures and shades that build up the painting. The technique creates the context, like the chapters of a novel. The main protagonists
