Best of Both Worlds – The Heart of a Seeker
Part One
The sun looks like it’s about to rise,
Joshua murmured suddenly. Maybe we should think about heading back soon?
Why?
Celia was busy staring off to the horizon, seeking, sensing or actually seeing something that was still beyond Joshua’s range.
He gave a little shrug and smiled crookedly at her. I know that we can’t be harmed by the sun’s rays anymore but…
You’re still not comfortable outdoors in daylight?
she looked across at him and returned his smile knowingly.
Maybe in time… but it’s been so long for me… decades… centuries…
She reached for his hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze, and Joshua still marvelled at the heat she generated… it felt so good.
I do understand how difficult it is for you still… to trust in magic and spell craft… but you’ll never adjust to the sun if you keep hiding away from it.
I know… and I’ll try to be more resistant to it; but I still burn easily, even if it’s not to the ashes and soot point of view. The sun might not be able to disintegrate me anymore, but it can still – damage me.
She raised her eyebrows in surprise. You never said anything, show me.
Joshua looked quickly to the horizon, and saw the first red beams of the rising sun.
Back at the cave… come on let’s get going.
He turned to run back, but Celia’s hand on his arm held him rigid.
Not yet Joshua, show me the damage to your body, the damage that your vampire blood can’t heal.
He gave a little grunt of impatience, but he realised that she wasn’t going to move… or let him move, until she’d seen what the sun had done to him.
He rolled up his sleeve, to reveal the red prickling rash that was like very bad sun burn, some of the skin had even started to blister, and peel.
And when did you get this?
Celia asked as she gently ran a hand across the painful area.
Joshua grimaced as he felt the unaccustomed pain.
That afternoon just before that woman – Marion – came to see us… you were so passionate, and determined about making love under the blue skies…
he smiled in remembrance and his eyes glinted silver as the passion for this woman once again swept through him.
She gave him a quick glance as she picked up on, and reciprocated his lustful feelings. That was more than four months ago…Why have I never seen this before?
Joshua gave a little shrug. It fades away once we are under cover – or after I’ve fed, but it always seems to flare up again, if I step out into the sun… and each time it gets a little bit worse, and it takes a little bit longer to fade.
Celia, could see for herself that the skin was growing angrier with each second that the sun rose.
All right,
she said suddenly, Let’s get back to the cave and I’ll take a look at it for you.
Joshua didn’t argue, he just turned to run, but a sense that Celia had not yet moved, stalled him again.
She was looking out to the horizon again.
What is it… what’s wrong?
She looked back and smiled, and then with a little sigh she turned and began to
