    Julian Durand wasn’t prone to moments of self-doubt. Indeed, doubt of any sort rarely found a place to rest in Julian’s mind – it was not how he’d been raised.

    Self-assured, almost to the point of cockiness, he, from the time he was weaned off his wet nurse’s breast, had been taught that his place in the world was one of both great privilege and great responsibility, especially to those the creator of the great universe had seen fit to place beneath him – women, for example.

    Women, he had been taught, were only slightly above children. Those of the fairer sex needed men to protect and guide them, and he looked upon women most often with a general delight, their antics – of which they all would engage from time to time because of their childish nature – most often caused him amusement rather than ire.

    But at the moment he was not amused, and a bit of a shadow of self-doubt was flickering around in the back of his head looking for a place to land and set up shop. He didn’t like the feeling, and that made him somewhat angry at the two women who would be coming into this, his temporary study in his Uncle Louis’ library, in just a few minutes.

    He got up and stoked the fire that was threatening to go out in the massive fireplace. It was a cool night in New Orleans, a rarity for the time of year, and he had taken advantage of it to indulge in a pleasure – reading beside a crackling fire. But first he must deal with the unpleasantness of punishing Maggie and Phillipa, both of whom had defied him by going out without a chaperone. Both of them!!
