Chapter 1
WHO WAS SHE?
On December 2, 1948, Cathy was getting up out of bed that morning to go to work. She would go to her job, in public relations in the Prime Minister’s Office in Ottawa, Canada.
She lived with her parents, in a mansion on a hill outside of Ottawa. It was a large three-story Victorian style home with four bedrooms and four baths upstairs, two bedrooms and two baths down stairs. It had beautiful wallpapering and many huge pictures of family members and other paintings by famous artists. It was gorgeous inside with chandeliers and other lighting. The dining room could seat 36 people, and the living room was really a big ballroom. There was a huge kitchen leading out to the patio. All the floors were hardwood.
They had a sitting room, family room, breakfast room, six fireplaces, large kitchen, washroom, and an office. The basement had a bowling alley, game room, and bar. There was a large lawn and in the back of the house with an enormous patio, flower gardens all over the yard and a huge waterfall. It had a wraparound porch with rocking chairs, five acres of land and a six car attached garage. Above the garage was where the chauffeur and his wife the cook lived. They had two maids and a ground’s keeper.
Cathy was a cheerleader during high school, took piano lessons, vocal training, singing in the glee club, and was a member of the drama club.
During the summer between her freshman and sophomore year, her parents sent her to charm school to improve her ability to communicate and groom her for society. Some of the things covered were family values, which her mother and father had already taught her, Self-discipline, respect for others, a strong sense of human decency, rules of decency, kindness and unselfishness, etiquette,(Style and grooming, dining skills, visual poise, first impression, Party operation, integrity, personal character and much more.)
Cathy was a beautiful girl with black hair and hazel eyes, 5’ 7" tall and slim. In her senior year, she was the Queen of the Prom, popular in school with a positive attitude on life, and a fantastic smile helped her to win this title.
In 1948, she graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class. Her father, owned a bank in downtown Ottawa, and was a friend of the Prime Minister, where she secured a job. Her father really wanted her to go to college or work at the bank, but she declined for now.
She had to learn all about Ottawa, its history, and attractions doing this by tours, visiting the library, and talking to people.
She thought to herself. It was such a beautiful day today, but I just love my job more than taking off with nothing to do. She thought it would be more exciting at work and be around people.
After taking her shower and dressing, she walked down the long winding steps to the first floor and into the breakfast room. Her father and mother were just starting to sit down and eat breakfast when she came in with eyes sparkling. She felt wonderful and filled with energy.
Hi Mom, Hi Dad, while they returned the same comments to her. The sun was coming through the window, which made her feel so alive. From this breakfast room, she could see the large flower gardens, waterfalls, and manicured yard out back. This made her feel even better.
She was looking for another wonderful day at work. After her dad read the paper, had eaten his breakfast, he said to Cathy, Are you ready to go to work?
Yes, and he said, Martha, will you please tell John to bring the limo to the front door.
Martha, his wife, the cook, called John and told him.
Her dad Henry said, Let’s go Pumpkin.
That was his nickname for Cathy. She liked that nickname saying, I’m ready daddy.
Henry got up, kissed his wife Sally, and then told her. See you tonight.
Sally hugged and gave Cathy a kiss on the cheek before she went to the front door.
On the ride into town, Henry got out his brief case and went to work. Cathy just sat quietly and enjoyed the scenery. John dropped off Cathy first. I will see you this evening pumpkin. Then John drove Henry to work.
When Cathy arrived at work, she greeted everyone with her warm smile and kind word to all that were so friendly to her. She went to her office, put down her purse, sat down, and looked at her to-do list for the day. Then she went for a cup of coffee bringing it back to her desk.
She had a busy day planned by writing information about the public relations office for the newspaper before giving a speech at the Chamber of Commerce. She looked at her notes for the speech and studied them repeatedly.
When ready to go to the meeting, she walked down the street to smell the flowers and listen to the birds chirping. She was not the least bit afraid to make the speech.
Upon her arrival, they seated her at the head table with the officers. They all ate lunch first before her speech.
After everyone had eaten, the Chairman introduced her before her speech. The members and guests applauded. She was on the stage behind the lectern, and the speech was to be about the Public Relations responsibilities her office had to the public. When she finished, everyone stood up giving her a standing ovation. During the speech, she smiled at all the people looking at them directly in the eye, which was a mark of an outstanding speaker.
After the meeting, the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce talked with Cathy and told her to please stay in touch. Cathy thanked her and told her she would be glad to help her anytime. She stepped down from the stage and proceeded to talk with other people who wanted to know more.
The single men in the meeting wanted to meet her after the meeting. She was not looking for a man right now to be in her life, but was polite to all of them and refused offers for a date. Two of the young men had made a bet about kissing her. When she started to leave, one of them grabbed and tried to kiss her.
