Angels in the Lives of the Saints

Our Lord ascended into Heaven; and His followers, filled with the Holy Spirit, set out to spread His Word of hope to the people of God. But you can understand, then as now, the enemy Lucifer, leader of all the fallen angels, has never wanted this Good News to be heard; his plan, from the time of Genesis, has been to rob us of relationship with our Creator.

But we say, in times of crisis, whether in the world or in the Church, God always raises up Saints. Cardinal Newman said of the Saints: They rise up from time to time in the Catholic Church like Angels in disguise and shed around them a light as they walk on their way Heavenward.

We would like to bring you only a few of the many occasions where Angels have played an important role in the lives of the Saints.

Let us begin with St. Stephen. (?-34 A.D.) Saint Stephen

He was brought before the Sanhedrin. Some Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia and Asia convinced men to falsely accuse St. Stephen of blaspheming against Moses and God. His accusers heaped one lie upon another as they testified,

This man never stops making statements against the holy place and the law. We have heard him claim that Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.(Acts 6:13)

All those who sat on the Sanhedrin stared at Stephen. He knew his fate, if he did not deny our Lord Jesus Christ. He could not have been looking forward to the painful death they had planned for him. Instead of fear or anger, all who sat on the council said his face was like the face of an Angel. Was the Angel, who had consoled our Lord in the Garden, with him? Was St. Stephen reflecting the joy and peace of His Angel beside him?

St. Stephen stood before the Council. He brilliantly traced how unfaithful a people they had been from the time of Abraham to that very day. He powerfully concluded his debate with these words of condemnation,

"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are always opposing the Holy Spirit just as your fathers did before you.

"Was there ever any prophet whom your fathers did not persecute? In their day, they put to death those who foretold the coming of the Just One; now you in turn have become His betrayers and murderers.

You who have received the law through the ministry of the Angels, have not observed it. (Acts 7:51)

The ministry of the Angels! They had been given the law through the ministry of the Angels! And they dared not to follow it! His words brought about a fury that would not contain itself. Stephen did not look at the anger, at the threat to his life. As the members of the Sanhedrin gnashed their teeth, St. Stephen looked up to Heaven and cried out that he saw the Son of Man standing at God's Right Hand. (Acts 7:56)

Did an Angel pull back the curtain between Heaven and earth so that Stephen could see beyond? Was an Angel reminding him of the Lord's promise never to leave him? Did an Angel echo the words of our Savior, Be not afraid. I go before you, always.

Later, what or who gave St. Stephen the strength to ask the Lord to forgive those who were stoning him?

"As Stephen was being stoned he could be heard praying, `Lord Jesus receive my spirit.' He fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
