Every story of ours could open with us going on Pilgrimage and not really knowing what God is asking of us through the journey. This is one such story. We had been going to the Holy Land and Europe for many years, when we had a thought! There are beautiful Shrines to Our Lady and Our Lord and Our Heavenly Family right here on the North American continent. How about journeying in faith to Canada!

No sooner had we had this thought, than a beautiful couple invited us to come to Canada and give Retreats at their retreat house in Ontario and at churches in Canada. Well, it was so close to what the Lord seemed to be saying, we said a hasty Yes! And what a treasure we discovered!

    The Journey of Faith begins.

We began our Journey of Faith in Montreal, visiting St. Joseph's Oratory and Kateri Tekakwitha. The next day, we left Montreal and headed towards Quebec. Mid-way between Montreal and Quebec, we stopped at Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Little did we expect to see the magnificent sight that was nestled between the St. Maurice and St. Lawrence rivers. As your eyes drink in the breathtaking view before you, at the sweeping hills covered by a green carpet, lovingly sculpted, at the trees God planted, complementing the landscape, and the resplendent array of flowers gracing the grounds, it is hard to remember that this place was once referred to as a sandy mount not fit for man or beast.

The miracle, before you, came to be because of faith and the hard work behind that faith. The early settlers to the New World, with hope and determination, laid the foundation of what you see, when you visit the awesome Cap-de-la-Madeleine.

But let us begin at the beginning. The French government sent missionaries and explorers to the New World. In 1534, Jacques Cartier took possession of territory and called it New France in the name of the King of France. However, the founding of a permanent colony was not to come about until 1608, when Samuel de Champlain opened a relay station in Québec.

Now, Cap-de-la-Madeleine, at that time, was just a sandy strip of land. But to the Jesuits who received it from a fellow Jesuit, the Pastor of Sainte Marie Madeleine in France, it was a little bit of heaven. He only made one provision, the land would be used for evangelization. No sooner done, on September 8, 1635, Cap-de-la-Madeleine was to receive its first missionary, Father Jacques Buteux, a Jesuit. The tiny handful of settlers and the American Indians were to hear the Gospel of our Lord preached by Father, until a few years later, when he was martyred by the Iroquois Indians, on May 10, 1652.

But the Word of the Lord would not be silenced. More Jesuit Priests came, and in 1651 they were given a residence in which they would found a mission. Fourteen settlers came, and they were given land on which they could farm. Eight years later, in 1659, the Jesuits granted the Boucher family, one of the Cape's first settlers, a small parcel of land, where they could build a Chapel. The Bouchers did indeed build a Chapel and the settlers of the Cape had their first parish church in the Cap-de-la-Madeleine. It was a small wooden building, measuring a mere 30 X 16 ft. But that didn't matter. It was theirs; they had a church. Overjoyed, the small group of worshippers flocked to their new church, which they lovingly called, The Church of Sainte-Marie Madeleine. In 1662, it was moved to the spot it occupies till today, with parishioners still worshipping there.

    Cap-de-la-Madeleine receives their first Pastor.

Cap-de-la-Madeleine was recognized as a parish in 1678, by Bishop de Laval, the Bishop of New France. Twenty-five years of dedicated evangelizing came to an end for the Jesuits. It was no longer a mission; it was now part of
