    Santo Niño de la Salud

The English translation of Santo Niño de la Salud is Holy Infant (Child) Jesus of Good Health.

We are once again in Mexico, the Mexico of tradition, the Mexico of Our Lady of Guadalupe. As we begin to share another instance where the Lord bestowed great graces upon the faithful of Mexico, we must pause to ponder on how we could possibly be losing so many to the Faith. More and more we hear how cults like the Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons are making inroads, proselytizing the holy people of Mexico to turn their backs on the Church and their Lady. If anyone would have told me that a son of Our Lady of Guadalupe would ever deny her, I would have insisted it was impossible. And yet this has come about and is growing; just as a fermenting unrest is spilling over to the far reaches of a once peaceful nation. After Our Lady of Guadalupe came to the Mexican people, Mexico became known as one of the most powerful nations in the world. Then, the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was removed from the flag, and with it, a campaign began to remove Her from the hearts of the faithful. The Mexico of great power and prestige was no more. And without their Mother guiding them, terror and chaos prevailed.

After the deluge, The Child Jesus comes to bring Good News

We now go to Morelia, a very charming city in the state of Michoacán. We speak of Holy Clusters. Michoacán was blessed by the presence of a Martyr, Blessed Miguel Pro, who attended the Seminary there, and in 1927 gave his life for Mother Church. We say that the blood of the Martyrs is what has always nourished our Church. Twelve short years later, Our Lord, not to be outdone in generosity, would bring new life into this city.

In Morelia, there was not much happening, outside of the every day business of rising each day, working and ultimately dying; but little else, until a tiny wooden statue of the Child Jesus came to town in the year 1939. Little known to the rest of the city, this little statue, with a big smile, came to the home of a young little señorita named Rosa Maria Guadalupe Calderon (Lupita to family and friends). Later she will be addressed as Mother Lupita.

Now Lupita received the statue as a gift. Whereupon she and her family began venerating it privately. In the beginning, the Child Jesus solely answered the family's petitions, as they were the only ones revering and petitioning the Holy Infant. But as word spread, and neighbors and friends began to plead with Lupita to pray for them before the little statue, miracles came about to believers outside the family; and more and more people venerated the little statue.

The statue got its name Santo Niño de la Salud or in English, Holy Infant (Child) Jesus of Good Health, because the miracles that came to pass were primarily ones pertaining to the physical - bodily ailments or serious maladies, accidents. The miracles grew more importantly to those of the spirit. People prayed to the Holy Infant and healings came about - families returned to the Church, loved ones survived otherwise fatal accidents. Word quickly spread. Jesus was in their midst and listening through this little statue called the Infant Jesus of Good Health.

Word got to the Archbishop of Morelia and he granted permission for private devotion and veneration. Then in 1942, the statue was crowned and the faithful received permission to venerate the little statue publicly. With more prayer and subsequently more miracles or favors received, a Novena to the Child Jesus of Good Health was approved in 1946. April the 21st became the official Feast of Santo Niño de la Salud. But in the city of Morelia His Feast Day is celebrated, till today, on the last Sunday in April.

Nine days prior to the Feast, the statue is brought to the Cathedral, where the faithful begin a nine day Novena. Saturday, on the last day of the Novena, in the evening, the faithful reverently place the little statue of the Child Jesus of Good Health on an ornately decorated litter, which they process out of the Cathedral. Then they place the Child Jesus and the litter on a flower bedecked float, upon which the Santo Niño will ride royally the three mile procession to the Santo Niño's Church. This church was consecrated by the local Bishop in the year 1963. Till today this church is the home of the original statue of Santo Niño as well as the Pilgrim Statue, a perfect replica of the original, which travels to the different parishes.

Mother Lupita, the same Lupita, who originally had been given the statue, founded a Community - the Missionaries of the Infant Jesus of Good Health. Under the Spiritual direction of the Archbishop of Morelia, the Missionaries, till today, spend their Apostolate promulgating devotion to the Child Jesus of Good Health and to the Good News that we are all saved by Jesus' Death on the Cross. They bring the Pilgrim Statue with them, reaching out to all - rich and poor. As the people look upon the Face of the Little Infant, realizing that it was He, Who died for them, they know deep in their hearts that Jesus is with them, Jesus loves them and Jesus saved them on the Cross.

So, someone gave a little girl a statue of the Child Jesus and she and her family, believing in His Love, prayed for His Mercy. From that faith, a Community grew and a movement of Hope was telegraphed throughout first Morelia and then to the entire state of Michoacán and then to all of Mexico and we pray now to the world. Jesus came into the world as an Infant, trusting in His Heavenly Father and the earthly Mother to Whom He was sent. Trust in Him and His desire to heal you.
