    Chapter 1

    Nurse, please record that the patient deceased at, Doctor Webber began before the heart rate monitor started to beep again.

    Doctor, he’s taking a breath!

    Boller distinctly heard everything that was being said as he was fighting to regain consciousness.

    Boller had been fishing on his canoe when he capsized the little vessel. He hit his head on the rocks beneath the water and lost consciousness. He had stayed under for a while before emergency workers where able to pull him out and perform CPR. Sometime after he was admitted to the hospital he stopped breathing and his heart stopped. It was after the doctors stopped trying to revive him that he pulled himself back.

    Sir, I’m sorry to have to keep asking this, but when your brain doesn’t receive oxygen for an elongated period of time, there’s an increased possibility of brain damage. Now, could you please repeat your name for me? the doctor asked him. It was probably the 20th time that Boller had been asked the question since waking up.

    The days following his waking were a blur of boredom to Boller. His friends and girlfriend all took turns visiting him. Question after question was repeated to him. What’s your address? What’s your Social Security Number? What happened next? No one could believe that he suffered no
