Once (or Twice) In A Lifetime
It was time to make a change and even before I knew where I was going, I knew I had to go. I didn’t need for anyone to tell me; I already knew that if I stayed where I was, the memories would just keep tripping me up and costing me everything that I had ever wanted from my life. If I stayed where I was, living would become a waste of breath for me, so I collected supplies and started packing.
And where are you going to go?
Cammie Patterson just barged into my thoughts. She had a way of getting to a point, and when she tried to pin my intentions down, I kind of hated her for it, but that was and always had been Cammie.
I’ll know when I find it,
I told her, hoping she would let it go from there.
But she struggled against every hope tried to muster. Are you looking for the perfect house, or the perfect escape?
Frowning didn’t help me out of the trap she was laying for me. So I tried, I don’t know what you mean.
Of course you do, Janae. You and Tony started out in this house. Together. Now he’s gone and you’re on your own, so the question is simple: are you running away to hide, or just plain running?
Damn. The girl was a thief and she’d stolen the little wall I’d built to hide behind. She’d stolen the piece of mind I’d lied myself into believing. Worst of all, she’d stolen the blinders I was hiding behind.
I don’t think I want to talk about this right now.
Of course you don’t. Of course you’re uncomfortable moving forward without Tony.
She sighed and let drama color her voice. You were lucky enough to find and marry your hero – your perfect man. You were blessed with a once in a lifetime love, but who says it couldn’t happen again?
I turned to look fully into her face and shook my head. Do you even hear the words that are coming out of your mouth? Can we just do what we’re supposed to be doing here?
She tossed her head and tried to look wise. If you insist…
I pointed a stern finger toward the boxes at her side. I absolutely insist. There’s a ton of stuff to do in here.
Standing in the light from my wide kitchen windows, Cammie looked like she might have been more at home on a beach holding a drink with an umbrella in it. But bless her heart; she was giving me her best supportive effort and trying to help me get a start on the packing that I would eventually have to do. She pushed a box toward me with her foot. What do you want in here?
Cookbooks.
She pulled two big ones from the counter and stared
