I live in a split entry house. From the front door, a short flight of stairs leads up to the main floor and another leads down to a hallway lined with overstuffed bookshelves. One Halloween, I opened the door to two trick-or-treaters, about nine years old. As I offered them candy, one of the boys asked in an awed voice, "Are you rich?" Laughing I asked him why he thought so, and he said, "All of those books!" Afterward, I looked at the paperback mysteries, the old encyclopedia we'd acquired one volume a week at a grocery store, the assorted hardbacks from bargain tables and secondhand stores, and I realized that he's right, I am rich. -Lisa Hall Deckert

Introduction
Hi, I’m Denali Hawthorne. I go to high school in Anchorage, Alaska. My mother says I have insatiable curiosity
like the Elephant’s Child. I looked it up on the web (okay, I was curious) and it’s from a story by Rudyard Kipling called How the Elephant Got Its Trunk. It’s about a curious baby elephant and how much trouble he gets into by asking questions. It’s actually a pretty good story although there seems to have been an awful lot of spanking going on way back then.
Anyway, because of my curiosity, I’ve picked up lots of little bits of knowledge, mostly useless. For example, did you know that the duckbill platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs? Try working that into a casual conversation some time!
But occasionally some little fact comes in handy. This is a collection of twelve little mysteries that I was able to solve because of some little things I remembered or observed. See if you can solve them too.
Chapter 1: Bearly Dangerous
Denali was at her friend Kirsty’s house, talking with Kirsty and her cousin Meghan. Meghan was visiting from Florida.
Sledding was fun. I’d love to try cross country skiing, but I think it is just too dangerous,
Meghan declared. "I mean this is the first time I’ve ever even
