Chapter 1 - Destiny and Harlen
I was raised in an orphanage it was called The Heavenly House. It was a two story white palace. The front lawn was covered with statues and topiary. My favorite statue was a horse standing on his hind legs kicking with his front legs. All the bushes were trimmed neatly in shapes of animals and in spirals. The walkway up to the orphanage was made up of the most beautiful blue stones. The inside floor was hardwood with a variety of handmade rugs of all shapes and sizes. The second floor was where all the rooms were located. At the very top of the stairs was a large room where Hannah and Anna stayed. There were 10 rooms, five down one side of the hall and five down the other side of the hall. The boys were on the left and the girls were on the right. There were two bathrooms one for boys and one for girls.
It however, was not as heavenly as the name suggested. It was run by some ruthless, heartless twins named Hannah and Anna. They never paid any attention to anything the children might have been doing and just yelled all the time at Destiny and Harlen, whoever was in their space at the time. It definitely was their way or the high way type of home. They were very old, they looked almost ancient. Hannah had long salt and pepper hair and wore large glasses that made her eyes look a lot like a bugs. Anna had short silver hair and had far more wrinkles on her face than Hannah. Anna looked a lot like a bag of bones whilst Hannah was a little more plump. Although they looked completely different from each other both had the personality of piranha. They would just as soon strip the flesh from your bones than look at you or deal with you.
The overlords of the orphanage were not the only problem. I was always regarded coldly in general. You see the other children had parents that were otherwise disposed or locked up. Some were even off to war. My parents are just a mystery no one knows what happened to them, because of this I never made any friends with any of the other kids at the orphanage except one. They would say things like: You are so horrible when you were born your parents deserted you because you’re not worth loving, that’s why your parents’ aren‘t here now, if you were worth loving you would have a family and your parents aren’t here because you are obviously pathetic. I lived in a home full of outcast; yet I was treated as an outsider. I was the only person that no one would share a room with. I was all alone with the smallest room, which seemed more closet than room.
My only friend in this drab place I call home is Harlen. He has dark brown hair, lily pad green eyes and his skin is a creamy white with just a hint of a tan. His arms are chiseled like those beautiful statues that people sometimes own. He had an oval shaped face. His chin was also very distinct, not pointing but not round and sunk into his face either it gave him the air of being royalty. He stood a full head taller than I stood.
Everywhere I went Harlen was always there with me. People would often call us two peas in a pod. He would sneak into my room at night and play with me while everyone was sleeping, because no one would even come into my room. No one wanted anything to do with me or to even be near to me. They would never tell my why in fact, they gave no reason at all. It was like everyone knew something about me that I didn’t know; everyone but me and Harlen. Or maybe he knew too just didn’t pay any attention to it like everyone else. No matter how hard the other children harassed us, Harlen never left my side. He was always there for me always defending me. We were just what everyone called us, two pea’s in a pod. Every day was something different for us.
Take the other day for example: Harlen and I were never allowed to do anything. We spent most of our days cleaning up after others. Everyone had chores they had to do. Jim had to sweep the floors, Cecilia had to vacuum, Gloria had to clean the mirrors, and Sam had to wash the windows. Do you know what chores we got for the day? We had to take out the trash do all the dishes and clean the kitchen spotless including cleaning out the stove and the fireplace. We also had to wipe down all the counters and windows as well. Anything in the kitchen there was to clean it was our job to clean it. The other kids always had the easiest things to do.
Have you noticed that, no matter what, we always get the crappiest longest jobs to do? Far more than any other of the kids.
asked Destiny.
Yes I have noticed.
replied Harlen.
Why do you suppose they do that to us?
Well destiny to them we are the outsiders and we always will be.
I didn’t do anything to anyone. Why do they have such a problem with me?
Destiny you didn’t have to do anything wrong. It’s not your fault. Some people just have closed hearts. They will hate you only because they don’t understand you. It’s not fair and it’s not right, it’s just the way it is.
Why don’t we change it? Why don’t we change it together? We could change this world we live in. Make it better. Show them we are someone. Can’t we do that?
Destiny we cannot change how someone thinks and acts. They have to change themselves. They will have to want to change. If they don’t want to change then they won’t no matter what you do. The only thing we can do is follow what we think is right and live for ourselves. Destiny, don’t judge yourself by how others judge you. We must be happy with ourselves.
It just doesn’t seem right.
You’re right it’s not.
They spent the rest of the time cleaning in silence. There just didn’t seem there was anything more to say. Nothing you could say would make it anything better or make it fair. You see sometimes it’s not the hand you’re dealt, but it’s how you play it.
One day Harlen and I decided we should go outside and just look around for anything we could find. We played hide and seek in the front yard hiding behind the topiary and the statues. He always ended up asking me where I was. He was never able to find me. Then we played tag. He always won he is so much faster than I am. We spent time lying in the grass pointing out shapes in the clouds. I saw a bunny in a tutu and Harlen saw a frog jumping. We spent all day running around playing outside enjoying the sun. We ended up falling asleep in the sun. Suddenly it started to rain. It wasn’t that bad it was a warm rain. The two of us played in the rain. Then it started to rain really hard. We both rain as quick as we could trying to get back inside of the orphanage.
On the way back to the orphanage I noticed Cecilia looking out the door watching us running. She was laughing and pointing and getting all the other children to come watch. We were so close to the door when Jim pushed Cecilia away from the door waved and then slammed the door shut. Harlen made it to the door and tried to open it and he found the door locked. Our luck started to get even worse at that moment. It started to hail; lightning flashing everywhere. Both Harlen and I pounded on the front doors. No one came to check and see or even attempted to open the doors.
Harlen suggested that we should huddle together under the door to try to stay out of the hail and rain. He said that if we stayed close together we could stay warm. We stood there for quite some time. Then Harlen got an idea.
Destiny help me find a rock or something hard.
said Harlen.
What do we need the rock for?
We are going to find a rock and go around to the back of the house. Then we are going to toss the rocks at the windows to the room of Hannah and Anna.
That’s a great idea get the attention of the keeps of the house and they will let us in. Then Cecilia and Jim would get their just rewards. But wait what if you break a window. There will be hell to pay if we break a window.
Don’t worry, I will be careful besides we need to get inside or we might get sick.
Quickly they both found some small rocks and Harlen began pelting the windows with them. Before long Anna came to the window. I started waving to try to catch her attention. It worked because before long she was leaning out the window yelling at us.
What do you two think you are doing? It is a bad storm outside and you two dumb oxen decide to play in it? I always knew there was something wrong with you two.
We are not playing in the storm. The other kids have locked us outside. They saw us running for the door trying to get out of the storm, and then slammed the door in our face and locked it.
I’ll be right down.
Destiny and Harlen hurried around to the front. When they made it around to the front the
