Scott get in bed mom’s coming I hear her,
I said
No, I want to play I don’t want to sleep.
Please Scott get in bed she’s coming I hear her.
No.
I got up and ran to the bottom bunk of our old brown bunk beds. They were made out of what appeared to be pine wood, they had a ton of scratches and scraps and the occasional drawing or burn mark. I pulled my sheet up around my neck and closed my eyes very tight and waited for what I knew was coming. Dread falling all around me.
what the hell are you doing up. I told you it was nap time. You woke me up.
I wasn’t tired mommy. So I got up and played.
Get your ass in bed like I told you.
Thump. I heard Scott cry out.
Next time you will do as you are told.
Thump. Scott cried out again.
Hurry up and do as you are told. And quit crying if you wake your sister up I will hit you again. Then you will really have a reason to cry.
I close my eyes tighter. I cannot even open them once. If she sees she will hit him again with her wrist brace across the back. When mom had her brace on I always tried to be good. It had a metal piece in it and it hurt bad. It often left bruises.
I hear Scott sobbing as he climbs into bed. I want so bad to go and comfort him but I cant move. I cant make any indication that I am awake. I hear mom leave the room and go back to her bed. Scott is still sobbing.
"Scottie, are you
