    When the sound of the car doors slamming reached her ears, Julie Carstairs wanted to punch the air and holler; instead she closed her eyes, let out a soft sigh and allowed her body to flop back into the settee like an old rag doll.

    Her husband John had agreed to take Mark Clark back home. Julie wasn’t stupid, they were going via a pub, just to call in for a swift half before dropping him off, would have been his reply if she had been given the opportunity to get a bloody word in.

    Of all the lads that John had brought back from work, he must have been without doubt the strangest one. He looked like a pre-war relic. They had buried her granddad in a suit like he had on. The lad had stunk of carbolic soap; she could still smell it even now.
