    Prologue—Janie

    Ten Years Ago

Janie looked around the crowded bar from her perch near the taps and tried not to cry.  Her blind date was a no show.  Or, worse yet, he’d seen her, was totally repulsed, and left without talking to her.

She sighed deeply and tried not to grimace as she took a drink of her wine.  She didn’t actually like wine that much, particularly the cheap wine they served at dive bars like this, but on her last date the guy had criticized her for drinking beer like a dude so now she felt self-conscious.  She threw the crappy wine toward the back of her throat and drained it like it was a shot of tequila, then shoved the glass away from her and took a shuddering breath.

Another one? the bartender asked, leaning over the counter to be heard over the noise.

Janie shook her head without looking at him. Make it a beer this time, she responded.  Whatever beer you have on tap. She was going to enjoy a damn beer and then end this stupid night. She had a comfortable couch and good book waiting for her at home.

The bartender slid over a frosty mug of beer just as she felt someone move onto the vacant stool next to her.  Two shots of Patron, she heard her new neighbor request. Hey there, sweetheart, how ya doing tonight?  Janie ignored him, figuring he was talking to someone else, and took a long pull of her cold beer.  Yum, that was better.

She felt someone touch her arm and turned her attention to the newcomer, catching her breath.  Holy crap, he was a hottie.  He had an air about him, it almost felt magnetic, and she felt instantly drawn to him despite his disheveled appearance. He was tall and lean but obviously well-muscled, his biceps well defined through his skin-tight shirt. His shaggy brown hair was partly hidden by a battered ball cap, but it fell in thick waves almost to his chin, which was square and covered with scruff.  Deep, soulful brown eyes were a bit glassy, telling her that this wasn’t his first shot of tequila.

She mentally shook herself and looked pointedly at his hand, which was resting lightly on her arm.  May I help you? she asked.

He smiled, and Janie felt a shiver of awareness move down her spine. Just saying hello, sweetheart.  What’s your name?

Janie. Hearing the breathless quality of her voice, she mentally shook herself and consciously arranged her face into a look of icy indifference.  She didn’t know what game he was playing, but guys that looked like that did not talk to girls who looked like her, even if it was last call, which it wasn’t.

Well Janie, it’s very nice to meet you, he said with the enthusiasm and careful diction of someone trying not to act drunk. I’m Johnny.  His hand slid slowly off her arm,  leaving a trail of fire on her skin, and he turned to face her more fully.  How’s your night going sweetheart?

Not that good actually, she responded, looking away to take another drink of her beer. She could feel his gaze focused on her even while she tried to ignore him. He was looking at her like she was the only person in the room. Why was this hot guy talking to her?  Was this some kind of practical joke? Did he lose a bet?

Long ago Janie had accepted that she’d never be one of those girls who turned heads.  If she had to define herself, she’d say she was on the low end of average. Her brown hair was straight and a bit dull. Her brown eyes were highlighted tonight with a thick coat of mascara, but normally unremarkable. Her breasts were definitely in the full D cup category, but sadly the rest of her body was proportionate, and she moved between a size 12 and a size 16, depending on her energy for dieting and the brand of clothing.  Lately she’d been firmly on the size 16 side of that range. And even though she was the same size as the average American woman, that put her right into the plus size clothing category.  Or fat, as she’d been constantly reminded by the mean girls in high school. Mousy looking chubby girls did not get hit on in bars by guys who looked like the guy currently staring at her.

Oh my god, that’s why her date had blown her off, she decided with a jolt of disgust.  Even though she had taken great pains to look her best tonight, he had seen her and blown her off without a word.  Jerk.

Janie realized the guy next to her was still staring at her and she turned towards him again as he mumbled something she didn’t quite catch.  What? she asked, a bit hostilely. What do you want?

He appeared not to notice her tone. His smile was cocky and self-assured as he said, I was asking if you wanted to get out of here.

She looked over each shoulder before returning his gaze.  Huh? Me?

He smiled again, full of masculine entitlement, and then winked.  He wobbled a bit on the stool, as if the effort to move his facial muscles had upset his equilibrium.  Yeah you.  Let’s get out of here sweetheart. I have a hotel nearby. What do you say?

She looked at him incredulously and shook her head.  I say I don’t even know you.

Oh,  but I think you do know me, he responded arrogantly as he downed one of his shots of Patron. Janie noticed that the other shot glass was empty too, although she hadn’t seen him drink it.  She realized he was slurring his words a bit and wondered how drunk this guy actually was.  She sniffed furtively, but everything in this place smelled like alcohol and desperation so she couldn’t say what was him.

She saw movement in her peripheral vision.  Some tiny blonde in a tiny micro-dress was simultaneously glaring at her and trying to get Johnny’s attention from a few seats down. Looks like there’s someone else there trying to get to know you. She gestured towards micro-dress. Why don’t you run along and go chat with her?

His eyes glinted in challenge.  Clearly this guy was not used to being told no.  Cuz I want to chat with you.

He leaned forward and wrapped his hand around the back of her neck, pulling her in towards him.  Janie stiffened in shock. He paused for a moment, looking deep into her eyes.  She knew she should pull back, but somehow couldn’t.  Was this some kind of weird dream?  She subtly pinched her thigh to see if she was really awake.  It was like he had hypnotized her. What was happening?

Holding her still with his hand at her neck, Johnny brought his lips closer and whispered,  I don’t usually like the big girls, but there’s something so attractive about you—I just have to get a taste.

Janie felt his words like a slap. Nope, this was definitely not a dream, just her sucky life.  Did you just call me fat?!? she asked incredulously, her voice high and angry.

He paused, looking adorably confused, like a toddler being kept away from a toy.  Come on sweetheart, don’t be offended. I said I’m willing to look past that.

White hot rage filled Janie and she shoved him in the chest, hard.  Already off balance, he toppled backwards off his stool and landed in a heap on the floor.  Look past this, asshole! she said loudly, as she poured the rest of her beer on him.

Every eye in the bar turned towards them. She heard laughing and looked up to see a table of guys nearby, Johnny’s relatives by the looks of them,  snickering and pointing as Johnny lay on the ground, dripping with beer.  What the hell? Why’d you do that? he asked, looking up at her incredulously.

With one final glare, she grabbed her coat and purse off the back of her chair, turned on her heel and rushed around him, heading towards the door. Hey, miss.  She stopped at the front door where they checked IDs.  Are you OK? the woman working there asked.

    Yeah thanks. Janie answered.

I can’t believe you did that to great Johnny Oliver, the woman said, shaking her head with a laugh.  "I’m sure that dude usually
