She would be with her every step of the way. What followed was the realization that her husband was dead and their future was no more. All the things they were going to do; getting a chateaux in France, having a family, getting a cat when they moved to the suburbs and bought their own place. The future was full of life and in a split second it became a blank canvas; all because of a stupid accident.

In a small apartment in Manhattan, Kate Murphy is packing up her entire life into her yellow VW Beetle with help of her best friend Jessica.

You don’t have to do this you know, Jessica says as she heaves the last box into the car.

Kate turns to her friend as she slams the boot shut with a sad smile creeping across her face; yes, I do.

They return to the apartment for one last coffee before the childhood friends’ part ways. Kate looks around the living room, remembering all the fond memories created in her home before the nightmare came; her and Karl celebrating their engagement with their friends, drinking, laughing and dancing. She can see Jessica and her new beau at the time – tall, blonde and handsome as usual – walking in to find her and Karl having fun on the sofa. She walks into the bedroom and sees Karl lying on the brass framed double bed the night they got back from their honeymoon in Marseille curled up amongst the lilac bed linens sound asleep; tan marks around his wrist from his watch, a light bead of sweat trickling down his temple and the softness of his purr-like snoring just before he entered a hurricane of deep sleep.

Kate is drawn back out of her reverie when her red haired friend calls out, coffee’s ready.

Jessica sidles over to her tall blonde friend stood in the doorway of her old bedroom. With a cup of coffee and a reassuring smile they make their way to the windowsill in the living room; overlooking the newspaper stand across the street.

You’re really brave you know, Jessica offers fondly.
