    Chapter 1

There he is, sprawled out spread eagle on his king-sized bed, entangled in the blue Egyptian cotton bed linens. James De Vitis; his lean, muscular golden abs glowing with sweat in the candle light; his thick, dark hair mussed where Kate had ran her hands through it as she rode him not half an hour earlier. Kate slides out from his grasp, his arm laid gently across her lower abdomen – promising protection. She reaches down to snatch her red halter dress and right shoe off the floor and quickly dresses as she searches out her purse and left shoe.

    What are you doing?

This happens every time they go back to his and she isn’t surprised to find herself having this conversation once again.

    I’m going home.

James stirs, rubbing his sleepy eyes and ruffling his hair running his hand down to his carefully groomed designer stubble, why?

Kate loves spending time with James, he is fun and exciting and the sex is, well, mind-blowing. All she can think about in this moment is: why does he have to make a big deal out of this?

I’ve told you before, I’m not ready. She walks through the bedroom door calling back, I’ll see you in the morning.

Kate walks through James’ beautiful home on the cliffs edge overlooking the sea; shoes in hand. Part of her wishes she could stay the night. She always felt so peaceful here, far enough from other people to be pleasantly isolated but not so far as she felt ostracized. The rooms were tall and the external walls mostly window. During the day the light flooded in. James’ bedroom was the best in the house; it was circular and at the top of the house, the sunset and sun rise could be seen here and the French doors open out onto the roof terrace overlooking Miami. It was beautiful up there, yet Kate still couldn’t help but think about how amidst all this beauty she was still betraying him. If she wanted James she would have to live with that guilt until she is capable of letting it go, but right now the only way to cope with it is to distance herself when it gets too much; and that is exactly what she is doing. Her feet softly padding along the wooden floors and her shoes in hand Kate hopes that either James will understand why she has to leave every night very soon or that she will free herself from this undeniable yet unnecessary guilt.

The cars fuel gauge hits red and Kate pulls over to the nearest gas station to fill up. It’s 4am and she is exhausted. She knows that James is getting impatient with her; the past 3 months had been amazing but every time she lay next to him after they had just had sex all she could think about was Karl now and an immense guilt would come over her. Is it too soon to start a relationship with someone new?

Sat in her trusty VW Beetle she thought about her and Karl’s summer working in a resort near Marseille. They worked all day and spent the evenings soaking in the local
