THE BEGINNING

There certainly is a reason why each phase of life you enter is marked by some events that would either scar you or lift you. It is for the sake of memories, that way you can never forget just what it is that caused the phase to be such a memorable one.

It wasn’t the kind of day she had hoped for entirely, she would have preferred to spend it cuddled up under the sheets with David, or sharing a hot cup of Chocó, with pizza and her favorite series. But here she was rushing out of a cab, into a restaurant a few meters away from the hospital she worked to get some morning kick of caffeine boost for the day ahead. She tried out Heather’s number again and it rang straight to voice mail.

With a deep sigh, she stepped in front of the counter and smiled at the attendant.

I’ll have a cup of coffee to go please she said and reached for a five-dollar bill in her purse. The girl smiled weakly and then coughed, using the inner crease of her arm to cover her mouth.

She smiled again and started to fill the cup of cough, coughing again for a longer period now. Katherine frowned and looked around her; everyone seemed to be normal, getting around their business as usual. The girl moving to hand over the cup to her coughed again and this time she looked at Katherine straight in the eyes.

Are you alright? she asked concerned and then noticed the sweat that glistened on her forehead.
