Daniel and Tasha' s story was sweet and enjoyable. I had to score it average for the many typos all through the book. Tasha had a chip the size of Texas, and my hope would be for her to learn to suck it up and face it head on, rather than to keep running away at the first sign of trouble!

Chapter One

Tasha groaned at the company-wide email sitting open on her computer: Annual Company Retreat followed by an entire list of couples’ activities. Times like this, she wished she hadn’t kicked her ex to the curb. Couples’ activities meant significant others were invited.

Who was she kidding? She hadn’t been the one doing the kicking. She was the one who got putted across the infield like the game-determining field goal. The thought nearly made her choke up all over again.

Stephan had been her everything, or so she thought. He’d charmed his way into her life, allowing her to stop stressing while finishing her degree and focusing on a nice career, and then cleaned her and her 401k out. Thankfully, her paycheck hadn’t been deposited yet or she wouldn’t even been able to put food in her belly.

Three months later and she was still struggling to recover. If she didn’t go to the retreat, she’d get passed up, again, for a promotion, one she desperately needed. How in the world did she end up being the only single person? She was IT and worked with a bunch of freaks and geeks, and yet she was the only one going home to an empty house. The irony.

Hey, Tash.

She turned at the sound of her coworker’s voice. Gabe flashed her a yellowish toothy grin as he waited at the edge of her cubicle for permission to enter. Tasha slid her chair as close to her desk as she could to allow him room into her already cramped space.

Gabe. She plastered a fake smile to her face. Come on in.

He turned sideways and waddled in. Though Gabe only stood at five-six, just an inch taller than her, he had her beat by nearly two hundred pounds. His belly was so big it spilled above and below his belt.

What can I do for you? She rested the palm of her hand on her chin and slanted her fingers just below her nose. To her coworkers, this was her thinking pose. For her, it was to protect her allergies from the numerous pet danders lingering on their clothing, waiting to attack her nasal passages.

It’s Pete’s birthday. I wanted to make sure you signed his card and donate if you like. You know his wife is due any day now. He handed her a card and pen.

Going old school, huh? She scribbled a quick note and signed her name in the first empty space she could find.

Yeah. He let out weird giggle. We can’t stick money in an eCard.

This is true. She opened the bottom drawer of her desk and pulled out her purse. You guys got lucky today. I have cash. She dug inside for the ten-dollar bill she found on the sidewalk on her way in.

Gabe frowned as she pulled out the crumpled up dollar and smoothed it out before sticking it inside the envelope.

Here you go. She passed the card back to him.

Thanks.

She waited until he was on to the next desk before letting out a sigh. There went her nice lunch for the day. Peanut butter and jelly it was. Again. Her stomach churned in protest.

She glanced at the time. Ten before eleven. No point in starting another project. She grabbed her container housing her unwanted sandwich and made her way out the building.

Daniel Roberts clicked his eSignature approval on the newest game people could play as a way of sorting through potential matches for the dating website. Who’d ever thought a concept he’d dreamed up his first year in college would ever get so big? Unlike the popular FaceBook, his website was designed specifically for dating, but more fun than typical dating websites.

Users were able to build a social wall and engage others just like social media sites, but with a few small filters. None of that silly poking stuff. What in the world was a poke supposed to signify anyway? DR Social was the perfect way to get to know someone without giving out your personal information.

He rocked his broad frame back in his chair and noticed the time on his touch screen monitor. A smile crossed his face, and he tapped the icon for a call. Seconds later, a beautiful smile complete with high cheek bones attached to one amazing brown-skinned woman flashed on the screen.

Hey there, you. Her soft dark curls blew over her shoulder.

You’re outside. He smiled. The clear blue day could be seen around her head.

Yup. At the park watching the ducks.

Oh, oh. What’s wrong?

Her brown eyes lit up as she laughed. You think you know me so well.

Though they’d only met in person once, she’d become a part of his daily routine. The moment he laid eyes on her he knew she was different than all the rest, more so the woman he’d brought with him to the wedding. He’d dated Claire Brewster for six months, and everyone but him were sure they were the next in line to get hitched. Sure, Claire was gorgeous, complete with naturally blonde hair, a sun-kissed tan, and flawless body from hours in the gym, but she just didn’t quite get him.

Daniel had the looks and a jock-like physique, but had the brain power to compete with Mark Zuckerberg. He’d often be on his computer for hours working out a new idea and wound up running late for a date. Claire would react by losing her mind and accuse him of doing it on purpose to embarrass her by making her wait. What would the blogs say if they spotted me alone? she’d asked. It was all about the status for her.

Better than you think, he responded to his techy friend. You only watch the ducks when someone at the job has gotten under your skin. Was it Raheem trying to get you to taste one of his wife’s dishes again?

Her button-like nose wrinkled up, and the slight dimple on her left cheek stood out. How I wish. There’s a company retreat coming up next month.

And?

I despise them. Everyone brings their family and kisses ass with the boss. If you don’t attend, you’re guaranteed not to get a promotion or a raise.

So go.

She rolled her eyes. You don’t get it. I’m a single woman. Everyone else has a family. I’m a leper compared to them.

Hardly. You forget I’ve spoken to you plenty of times when your coworkers just happen to stop by your desk. I’d take looking at you over them any day.

Her brown cheeks reddened a bit, matching the pink t-shirt she wore. Thanks.

I’m sure you’d work something out.

Like what? Having you pretend to be my boyfriend for the weekend? she joked.

His heart rate quickened. Even as a joke, the idea of having her as his sent him soaring. Be careful what you wish for.

Ha, ha. As if you’d leave Los Angeles to come to Atlanta. So, how are things going on your side of the desk? It must be nice to actually having your own private office. I wish they give us our own.

I’ll admit it does have its perks. He leaned back in his chair and grinned at her.

Mm hm. Who’s the new lucky girl?

Darn, there it was. She always made it a point to make fun of him for his dates. From their first conversation, she’d never let up. I’ll have you know I haven’t been on a date in two weeks.

What program are you working on? She smiled, and her right brow rose.

Now who knows who all too well? This was what he loved about her. She got him. Not a program, but new search filters. We’re testing it this week.

Sweet. Maybe I should sign up and find me a date. I have a full month to make someone one fall in love… well, in like.
