David Barron

I was born in Dundee in Scotland, and was a student at the University of Abertay. I have written many pieces of poetry over the years for Tailcast.com under my own name. I still write poetry but lately I have tried children's stories. The first was as a story to tell the grandchildren. As you can see I have written quite a few books now, but struggle to find the time to write more.I have a couple of new one's in the pipeline and I hope that you will all bear with me, I'm sure the kids will love them. Oh and I haven't forgotten the older generation among you and have a great idea for a new book that I'm sure you'll like also. Much love to all who have taken the time to read my stuff. Any feedback at vegvanman@live.co.uk.

    The Funeral

The funeral had been a solemn affair, and the drive back from the crematorium through the rain made everything seem a bit surreal. John had asked to be buried in beside his mother, but Jane wasn't having any of that, she needed to save money now that she had at last gotten rid of him. Anyway he was a moan and a bore, she'd realised that the first day after they'd gotten married at that cheap registrars office in the centre of town. Jane had always liked to go out and enjoy herself and was quite the party animal, good looking with her long blond hair, and long legs, blue green eyes, and a firm bust, she knew she was a head turner. She'd met John through work; she had been a secretary and he an office clerk. At first she'd found him rather a catch, he had thick black hair, and a Kirk Douglas profile, and would wander about the office making the girls laugh with his constant stream of risky jokes, which they secretly liked, and of course quite a few of the prudes in the office only laughed because they fancied him. She had missed that in him once they had gotten married, and wondered why he had slowly turned into a workaholic constantly moaning, staying at home, with no real friends to speak of, and no real prospects for either.

Of course things hadn't improved for him when his mother had suddenly died, and he had changed, not overnight, but slowly like a long lingering disease that crept up on you till you suddenly felt trapped inside a useless body. Well he was gone now, and she would get out there as soon as a decent period had passed, a week or two should be plenty, and get herself back on the scene. I mean why shouldn't she have fun, she was still young, still full of life, and could tango with the best of them. She would have to look through her old address book and get back in touch with some of her old friends.

The wake was a dismal affair in a run down hotel, which she had chosen because of its cheap prices on funeral arrangements for bereaved families. The waitress's were hanging round the table like vultures in their starched white aprons making sure the bar was doing a good trade in drinks, but she didn't mind, these leeches that had turned up were only getting the first drink bought for them. His sisters were sitting opposite her crying and talking about how they would miss John, fuck they didn't know him, he wouldn't have given them a free drink, bloody miser, wonder if they'd still be crying if they knew that one. Then she heard Molly his older sister say something about the sandwiches, being a bit hard, which she hoped she hadn't paid too much for, some hope, this had been done on the cheap. Well if they didn't like them they didn't have to eat them. Some guy stepped up to the mike and prattled on about how he'd known John for years, and where they had first met, and what a good man he had been, leaving out the obligatory piece about being a good father, and loving husband. They hadn't had kids she had never ever wanted any, well she had to look after her figure and she wasn't going to get fat so he could prance round his family showing off some snot nosed crying baby, not if she had anything to say about it. So they had talked about it but that was as far as it had went, she wasn't going to have any and that was final. The wake ended with people leaving in one's and two's stopping by her table to say sorry for her loss, but she didn't feel a thing, he was gone and this just confirmed it. Anyway half these people never really knew him or her come to that, and why were they sorry, it wasn't them that had been left to pick up the pieces, he'd left some debt but not a lot, and she would have his insurance policy pay out, and that would cover everything and still leave a more than sufficient amount to live on, not forgetting that he had a fairly substantial nest egg of his own, that would surely be coming her way. She had made sure that she had gotten him insured quite early on in their marriage well one never knew how things would turn out, thank god she had insured him for more than the minimum amount, she was sure to get a decent pay out. Still there was still the reading of the will, well that was a foregone conclusion, he'd left everything to her, she was certain of that, and boy did she deserve it, after years of slaving for him, and a nice holiday in the sun with some young buck on her arm was starting to sound good. They were all gone now so she sat and finished up her drink, and paid the manager for the nice spread he had laid on for her guests. Nice spread the words caught in her throat, she wouldn't have fed that muck to a starving dog, but she feigned a smile and handed over the cash. God how she hated them all, guests huh, she wouldn't have any one of those leeches at her funeral. The good thing was she would never ever have
