She could hear David upstairs in the bedroom slamming doors, dragging open drawers and closing them noisily, his impatient stride crossing from one side of the room to the other, going from his closet to hers.

'Shit!' came the muffled cry, accompanying the loud crack of another door being flung shut, as if -no such luck!- he had trapped his fingers in it.

Then there were his footsteps across the room again, along the landing, stopping at the top of the stairs.

'Mary!' he shouted down to her. 'Mary!'

'Yes dear? What is it?' she called back patiently, out of sight behind the kitchen door.

'My blue shirt, the one with the button down collar? Where is it?' he demanded.

'In the wash,' she answered.

'Aw! But I wanted to wear that tonight!'

'Sorry, love, but it was filthy.'

'But Mary-!' he began, and then there was the sound of the toe of his shoe kicking another door, perhaps the petulant stamping of a foot. 'Oh-!'

Here it comes, she knew, steeling herself for the outburst.

'-oh for crying out loud!' he cursed, and stormed back into the bedroom.
