It had seemed like the perfect arrangement, with student accommodation being so expensive. His aunt only used her London apartment at weekends, so David was welcome to stay Monday through to Friday while he attended college. There were a few conditions, of course. He would keep the place tidy, he would provide his own food, there would be no riotous student parties, and he would vacate the place by six each Friday evening, prior to his aunt's arrival.

David tried to remember the last time he had met his aunt. Ten years ago, twelve maybe. So didn't she like family? It was more a case of family not liking her, his mother explained. She had married above herself, become quite the lady, maybe a little too good for the likes of them.

Don't get me wrong, his mother concluded. Sonia's a good woman, she's generous and kind, but can just seem a little aloof at times. You take her up on the offer, David.

So he did, and the arrangement worked well, until the weekend his travel arrangements got fucked up.

David? He felt a hand on his shoulder, heard a soft voice say, David, wake up.

He had thought it courteous to wait up for his aunt, to let her know he was still there, but some hours after six she had still not arrived. Eventually he had fallen asleep on the sofa, now opened his eyes to see her sitting there beside him, her fingers resting lightly on his shoulder.

Yes, I'm awake, he said. And then, bleary eyed: I think.
