    1 Then God Said

Then God said, Let there be light; and there was light.

    Genesis 1:3

The song says, How great Thou art. Why is God great? Thy power throughout the universe displayed. The whole universe displays the power of God. What awesome power is God’s when the vast array of stars and planets and galaxies have all been created by him.

However, that is not where the Bible begins when it tells us about God. The Bible does not tell us only about God’s power, it tells us about God’s speech, about his word. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and he did this by speaking. We normally think the way the song goes: how powerful God must be. But the Bible points us not only to his power but to his speech. Then God said, Let there be light; and there was light.

At least nine times in Genesis 1 we read that God spoke. Every time something new appeared in the universe it was because God spoke. Everything that exists, from the beginning of time, came because God spoke it into existence, item by item, until the earth was created as a suitable place for human life.

Our speech does not carry that kind of power. I cannot snap my fingers and say, Let there be a hamburger on the table. Well, I can say it, but I am perfectly sure that it won’t happen. I cannot tell a glass of water to turn into lemonade and have it happen.

But God not only can do such things, in his Son Jesus he did do them. Turn water into wine. Multiply loaves and fishes into a dinner for thousands. Tell a thunderstorm to stop. The power of God in Jesus is the same power that God exercised when he created the world by speaking.

In this series of devotional meditations we will be examining numerous passages of the Bible that mention the speech (word) of God. What an amazing thing is his word!

PRAYER: Creator Father, help us not only to see your great power in the universe, but to hear you speak also in the glories of the creation. Amen.

2 The Word Of The Lord

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth.

    Psalm 33:6

We sometimes think that speech means communication, one person communicating with another person. This may be true enough for us humans, but it is not true for God.

There were no people, no other gods, when God spoke the words that created the heavens and the earth in the beginning. God was not communicating with some other person, he was simply speaking and thereby causing something to happen. Let there be light, and there
