Introduction
Christians often call themselves – besides a lot of other names – the children of God. Indeed the evangelist John wrote in his first chapter: „Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God". Sadly it's often true that even God's own children don't understand what being a son or a daughter really means. One of our enemy's strategies is to create a certain attitude in us, a way of thinking which leads to an a mentality not of sons but of slaves. So many christians do not enjoy their everyday lives as God's sons although that's what they really are. They have a different view on themselves.
Sons and daughters have a lot of privileges. The lifestyle of sons and daughters is radically different than the lifestyle of slaves. These two extremes are compared by the apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans:
„Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children". (Rom8,14-16)
Who are you?
Sonship or Slavery. What a difference. What would we choose if we could? Of course we'd choose a son's life. We already confirmed that we are sons by the miracle of spiritual birth through Jesus. But still many christians live a live of slaves.
Continuing this book I will mostly use the term „sons" exclusively. But I consider it obvious that the daughters of God are fully included in that message and term, too. I only do it for simplification.
A question of identity
Even though we don't find the word „identity" in the bible, it's a core message of the gospel. God has given a new identity to us through the work of Christ. The bible tells us that we became truly recreated:
„Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" (2Cor5,17)
We can read throughout the old and new testament that God installs new names upon people. At a certain point in their lives they have an encounter with God – and on that occasion God gives them a new name. A new name means a new identity. Even Jesus told his disciples that he doesn't call them servants any more but his friends. We are no longer slaves! God gives to us a new name, a new identity.
This and nothing less is God's view when he's looking
