Rehoming Ferri - R Samuels S Bush
Preface
When Ruth lost her beloved Lou it was sad news to me also. I had loved her too and knew that Ruth would be lost without her. She still had Bohdi but he had never been as devoted as Lou. Chinese Cresteds tend to be one-person dogs and bond very closely, and are also very protective.
I hoped Ruth would take another of my retired dogs on, but knowing she only wanted a girl there were only a couple of possibilities. The one she could definitely have was called Feral, as she was a wild little thing with a mind of her own, a chubby body, lovely slim legs and a beautiful face with whiskers.
Feral was one of 11 dogs sharing my house at the time and not well trained or well socialized. She had basically stayed home since she was born as she had grown too big to show and there had been a failed attempt to home her previously. She was low down on the pecking order the dogs had among themselves and I was sure that a home with Ruth would be heaven for her once she settled in.
Little did I know what a roller-coaster ride her settling in would be for Ruth.
This book contains the emails that went between us, mainly from Ruth to me, during the first couple of months of Feral’s transformation to Ferri. There were also visits and phone calls. Ruth has added notes to fill in some gaps and tell more of how she felt, particularly at the bad times. Apart from removing some personal details they contained and correcting the odd typo or missing word, what’s here is the original emails. The photos are also Ruth’s.
I hope you are as moved, touched, and amused by their story as I was.

REHOMING FERRI
RUTH
I had lost my friend, my companion, my child. All night I had sat up with Lou whilst she laboured for breath. A long night, but the decision was made.
I came home and wrote to S. S who had given me Lou when I had lost another friend.
From Ruth, Tuesday, 30 October,
Had to have Lou euthanazed this morning. Terrible, but had to be done. Lost my best friend.
To Ruth, Wednesday, 31 October, 12:18:29 AM
Oh, Ruth. I am so sorry. I have kept thinking of calling, but have been working.
