I had diligently waited at this corner twice a day for the last six days, this was my sixth night. I stood alone here for twenty minutes, once in the afternoon and once after midnight, and I intended to continue this heart driven vigil until...well, until I got an answer. I swayed back and forth, shifting my weight from leg to leg with the careless lack of awareness usually associated with someone under the influence of alcohol, mainly because I had been drinking non-stop for the last six days.

This was readily apparent to the cops who pulled in front of me tonight, getting out of their squad car and asking me what I was doing. I didn't get a chance to speak before they asked, Have you been drinking? I admitted I had with a resounding Hell yeah! and a crooked smile. One second later two flashlights were shining in my eyes and I was being pulled towards the car.

John Bernhart, the senior officer, scrutinized my pupils with clinical thoroughness, making a hasty, yet accurate, assessment of my condition. Cindy Cartwright, his junior partner, stood behind him, her hand hovering by her gun, her legs firmly planted in an aggressive stance.

I didn't know their names at the time, though they quickly announced themselves, but during the course of events which unfolded during the next forty five minutes we came to know each other quite well. Well, they came to know more about me than I could ever care to know about either
