About this ebook
Waylines is a magazine of science-fiction, fantasy, and horror. Our goal is to capture the "bang" in speculative fiction - that mindbending, wow factor.
Issue 5 features interviews with authors David Steffen and Ken Liu and film maker Christopher Frey, with the following stories:
1 Samantha Kymmell-Harvey takes us into the heart of music, monsters and love in "Cadence," a story that asks us just who the monsters really are.
2 David Halpert's “Elevator Man” examines the nature of sentience and the blindness of humanity to it's own past.
Waylines Media
Waylines is a magazine of science-fiction, fantasy, and horror. Our goal is to capture the "bang" in speculative fiction - that mindbending, wow factor. So we aren't limiting ourselves to a specific style of story or even media format. In every issue we publish fiction and poetry, stream short speculative films and are aiming to run short comics. Prepare to be blown away.

As fall creeps toward us on cautious feet, and the last few storms and weeks of fetid, humid heat smash against us here in Japan, we take a deep breath, turn the fan up a little bit more and take another journey across the Waylines! Let us introduce you to Issue 5’s fiction:
Samantha Kymmell-Harvey takes us into the heart of music, monsters and love in "Cadence," a story that asks us just who the monsters really are.
And…
David Halpert’s "The Elevator Man" examines the nature of sentience and the blindness of humanity to it’s own past.
For our films this issue:
Christopher Frey has created a hypnotic (and unique) end of the world scenario, "Explosions."
"Contre Temps," is the lovely animated adventure by Team Contre Temps of an underwater world and the race against time by two of its inhabitants.
And last, but not least...
Trevin Matcek has brought a human touch to a modern take of life everlasting in "Life Begins at Rewirement."
For our interviews this issue, Alisa sat down with Ken Liu for the Writers Room. And for our featured author interview, we chatted with the influential David Steffen of the (submissions) Grinder. And as always, we have our interviews with this issues writers/film makers.
We are also back open to submissions. So those of you with a story of your own, please send it our way and it just might make it in to the next issue.
Also, Waylines is gearing up for Year Two and will be running our fund raising campaign from January 10-February 10, 2014. If you like the magazine think about heading over to our Kickstarter campaign then. There are pledge rewards like posters, bookmarks, and our Zero Issue - an issue made just for our supporters. Help make Year Two a reality.
For now, enjoy Issue 5! Safe Journeys!
Sincerely,
D & D
P.S. - If you want to send us a message, you can do so on our site, and we can also be found at Facebook and Twitter.

David Steffen is a science fiction writer and reviewer who lives in Minnesota. His work is available or forthcoming from Daily Science Fiction, Pseudopod, Stupefying Stories and Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine. He also co-edits the Diabolical Plots website, and co-manages the (submissions) Grinder, an invaluable tool for all those writers out there who are looking to track their story submissions. We caught up with David over the summer to find out a little bit more about the man and the websites.
You have an exceptionally active online presence, with your Diabolical Plots website and The Grinder. Tell us a little about Diabolical Plots, what it is, and how it came to be.
In 2008 I started to get involved in the SF writing community, absorbing whatever advice I could find about how to learn to write, how to network, and so on. One piece of advice I heard over and over was that it’s important to have an online presence. The more present you are online, the more editors will be aware of you and the more opportunities readers will have to come across your
