They were part of one of those government top-secret experiments that went awry while conducting tests on a possible zombie preventive drug. The drug had some bad side effects and deformed the heads and mouths of the subjects turning them into hideous creatures. Instead of killing them, they let them lose in the mountains to fend for themselves. Today, they breed and powl the Appalachia in search of human flesh.

Instead of killing them, they let them lose in the mountains to fend for themselves. Today they breed and prowl the Appalachia in search of human flesh. So you folks be better to stay somewhere else.
The check-in clerk told them.
Kyle found him an odd sort of man and wondered why he spoke in such a soft whisper, like a child revealing the world's biggest secret. His long stringy red hair fell well past his shoulders and his face looked like it hadn't seen a shave in four months. His blackened teeth were in need of serious dental work.
It's okay,
Kyle assured him. I'm sure we'll be fine.
He grinned at Vicki as if it were all a big joke. A silent way of assuring her it was going to be okay.
The clerk shrugged his shoulders then went back to his paper work. Suit yourselves, but you'll be sorry. I'm sure of that.
