About this ebook
Mistakes are an inevitable and perhaps necessary part of human life. Sometimes we do the wrong thing consciously, at other times unconsciously. No matter whether our mistakes are grave or minor, there comes a point when we need forgiveness — from God, from others whom we have hurt, even from ourselves. In this book Sri Chinmoy offers us his illumining guidance on how to seek the divine Forgiveness
Sri Chinmoy
Sri Chinmoy was born in the small village of Shakpura in East Bengal, India (now Bangladesh) in 1931. He was the youngest of seven children in a devout family. In 1944, after the passing of both of his parents, he joined his brothers and sisters at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community near Pondicherry in South India. He prayed and meditated for several hours a day, having many deep inner experiences. It was here that he first began writing poetry to convey his widening mystical vision. He also took an active part in Ashram life and was an athletic champion for many years. Heeding an inner command, Sri Chinmoy came to the United States in 1964 to be of service to spiritual aspirants in the Western world. During the 43 years that he lived in the West, he opened more than 100 meditation Centres worldwide and served as spiritual guide to thousands of students. Sri Chinmoy’s boundless creativity found expression not only in poetry and other forms of literature, but also in musical composition and performance, art and sport. In each sphere he sought to convey the diverse experiences that comprise the spiritual journey: the search for truth and beauty, the struggle to transcend limitations, and the supremely fulfilling communion of the human soul with the Divine. As a self-described student of peace who combined Eastern spirituality and Western dynamism in a remarkable way, Sri Chinmoy garnered international renown. In 1970, at the request of U Thant, third Secretary-General of the United Nations, he began the twice-weekly peace meditations for delegates and staff members at UN headquarters that continue to this day. He offered hundreds of peace concerts, always free of charge, in the U.S. and many other countries. He founded the World Harmony Run, a biennial Olympic-style relay in which runners pass a flaming peace torch from hand to hand as they travel around the globe bearing the message of universal oneness. And he established the Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles humanitarian organization, which serves the less fortunate members of the world family by supplying food, medical and educational equipment and other urgent support. On 11 October 2007, Sri Chinmoy passed behind the curtain of Eternity. His creative, peace-loving and humanitarian endeavours are carried on worldwide by his students, who practise meditation and strive to serve the world in accordance with his timeless teachings.

Forgiveness - Sri Chinmoy
Overcoming Our Mistakes
O Forgiver of all my shortcomings,
Forgive me.
A new hope is being born in my heart.
I shall cry from today on
To grow into Perfection’s beauty-delight.
Question: When we realise that we have made a serious mistake in our lives, what should we do?
Sri Chinmoy: When we make any mistake, consciously or unconsciously, immediately we should cry for forgiveness. If we do not ask the Supreme for forgiveness, then our own negative qualities will be intensified. With our aspiration, our prayer, our meditation, our dedication and our oneness with God’s Will, we have to ask God to forgive us for all our mistakes, conscious and unconscious. We have to ask Him to illumine our unconscious mistakes so that we will become aware of them and not make them again.
Two hopes are constantly singing
Inside my throbbing heart:
I shall one day start loving
My Lord Supreme unconditionally;
My Lord Supreme will secretly tell me
That He has forgiven me everlastingly.
Question: How does the Supreme illumine the past?
Sri Chinmoy: The Supreme illumines the past by forgiveness. Real forgiveness means forgetfulness, conscious forgetfulness. Real forgiveness does not remember the past. If somebody really forgives you for something that you did, then he will not keep the memory even in his inner vision. Illumination is necessary because of darkness. Mistakes are darkness. So the Supreme illumines our mistakes through forgiveness.
The sunlit way to realise God
Is to clearly forget
And wisely forgive
One’s past failures.
Question: If God forgives us, does that mean He will not punish us for what we have done wrong?
Sri Chinmoy: The Western concept of forgiveness is usually associated with guilt and retribution. You give somebody a smart slap, and afterwards you feel sad or guilty. Then the other person will curse you and say that God will punish you. Or perhaps he will threaten to strike you in retaliation. There is a feeling that if you have done something wrong, the same kind of thing will be done to you unless you are forgiven.
But there is another way to look at forgiveness. God wants us to be at a certain height so that we can receive His Affection, Love, Compassion and Blessings, but right now we are not at that level. So God is begging us: Just raise your consciousness an iota and come up to this level. Then I will be able to give you My Love, My Compassion and My Blessings.
Our human mind may call it forgiveness, but God is not thinking about our inner and outer misdeeds. He just wants us to raise our consciousness so that we will increase our receptivity and oneness with Him. Then He will be able to give us more Compassion, more Light and more Love.
Only two miracles
Are worth seeing:
The miracle of loving
And
The miracle of forgiving.
Question: What is the essence of the
