Who among us has yet to experience the very real and visceral pain of heartbreak? Ultimately, everyone gets a turn on the wheel.

It is an age-old truism that all of us desire to be loved. It is this heartfelt summon that propels both men and women alike to seek out that special helpmate who will be companion to us on our journey through life. And yet, this seeking (with all its accompanying dynamics) is what can lead many of us astray. For in the quest for love, we often lose ourselves because we want what we want. And we can’t always see what otherwise would be apparent to the unbiased or naked eye. So we find ourselves reaching for that special someone who we believe will bring us happiness. Destination? Heartbreak!

To everyone whose search for happiness has led them to the Potter’s field of broken promises, shattered hopes and/or bitter waters, take heed. For within these seminal pages of My Gift of a Broken Heart lay the keys to healing your hidden hurts and cauterizing latent wounds. I would be remiss if I did not add that I have had the privilege of walking alongside Minister Tonette Dugar for these past many years. In this time, I have known Minister Tonette to be a woman of God who possesses a spirit of integrity and fearless courage. During times of intimate prayer with her, I am reminded of the heightened levels to which her prayer life has grown. And I have gleaned about her a sincere desire to please and serve.

Like Minister Tonette, perhaps you too have had a gnawing encounter within the four walls of the Church that has left you feeling emotionally raw, physically depleted and mentally bankrupt. What is striking to me is that even if your heartbreak experience was not linked to a romantic liaison, this defining moment may still have left you feeling emotionally crippled and unable to trust again.

If we are honest enough to confess, for many of us, our deepest, most heartfelt hurts have come compliments of the Church. In many ways, the Church is our training ground. It is the place of our Benoni (son of my sorrow). And yet, the Church can also be the same place of our healing and where we are subsequently made whole.

It takes courage to be transparent. But to be transparent on a public plane while those around you monitor your every move? That takes an exceptional kind of courage!
