The choice had not been an easy one for Ewan. The town was desperate, and so was he. He walked through the woods towards the small clearing where his fate awaited. Two men walked with him, one on either side. They made no move to hold him, nor were his wrists bound. They didn’t have to keep him from running away, because he’d chosen this of his own free will.

Something was terrifying the town, which had fallen back on its superstitious roots.

It was far too soon when they finally entered the clearing. The grass was a dead, dry brown in a wide circle. There was an ancient wood post in the center, taller than a man. A rusted iron ring stood out a few feet up. It had last been used to hold witches before burning them all hundreds of years ago, and many of the older people from the town said that the place was cursed.

From what Ewan remembered from stories and movies, werewolves were people when the moon wasn’t out. Did the werewolf live around here? Had Ewan seen the monster wandering around the streets in plain site? Did the man or woman cursed like that even know what kind of monster they were?

All questions were washed from his mind when Gregory hefted the rope he was holding.

You’re hands, Ewan, Gregory, the man on his right, said. Gregory had been one of his closest friends throughout school. Now, he cast his eyes down as he ran a length of rope over Ewan’s offered wrists. It was coarse, and it bit into his flesh enough to make him wince. Gregory didn’t loosen it up for him, though.

Even though he had volunteered as the sacrifice to save his town, they didn’t want to risk him getting cold feet. His fate was sealed.

When Gregory was finished, the other man ran more rope through the rusty ring, then tied that over Ewan’s bindings. They checked over the knots, then
