    ONE

Nancy checked out her reflection in the window of the campus bookstore. She smiled in relief.

    I didn’t forget! She said.

Anna, her long, black hair shining, raised an eyebrow at her. Didn’t forget what?

Brushing her bangs from her eyes, Nancy said, I didn’t forget my makeup. I always have this nightmare before the first day of class that I’ve forgotten and everyone thinks I’m homeless or something.

They got in line to take the elevator. The door to the stairwell was a few steps over, but their lecture was on the 6th floor.

Anna made an exasperated noise, one that she’d made many times before when Nancy said something like that. Homeless? Nancy, even without makeup you’re cute.

The elevator dinged. Nancy and Anna pushed in with about ten other people. They both clutched their bags to their chest. With their faces only inches apart, Nancy was very glad that Anna had remembered to brush her teeth that morning.

Cute? I don’t want to be cute; I want to be hot! Nancy whispered.

That was the first time she saw him. Nancy cast a stray glance over Anna’s shoulder. She was about to look back at Anna, when something about the guy standing in the corner of the elevator caught her attention.

He looked straight ahead at the elevator floor indicator. His eyes were a piercing blue, made more so by the pitch-blackness of his hair and eyebrows. There was something feral about him. If he’d lifted his lips, Nancy would have expected to see fangs.

The strangest thing about him was the space. No one else in the elevator would stand near him. They all shied away like frightened animals, leaving him a small pocket of room.

It wasn’t as if he looked like he had a gun. On the contrary, Nancy thought he looked quite handsome.

He turned his head the barest amount. Nancy found her eyes locked to his. Her body shook, and her heart raced as though she was in the middle of a marathon. His eyes were blue, so blue. There was something deeply sad in them.

The staring spell broke when Nancy felt someone grab her by the elbow and shake her.

    Nancy? Nancy? Earth to Nancy?

It was Anna. She looked more irritated than worried that Nancy had gone catatonic in front of her.

Shaking her head, Nancy did her best to look at her shorter friend. ...Sorry. I think I zoned out there.

She didn’t know why she didn’t tell Anna about the boy. She normally loved to point out handsome guys they could surreptitiously check out.

No kidding. Let’s leave before the door closes, yeah? Anna said, gesturing.

Nancy looked around. They were alone in the elevator. The doors were open. The lecture hall was visible at the end of the corridor. She shook her head again.

What just happened? She couldn’t think of any reasonable answer. So, like any normal, well-adjusted college student, she chose to pretend as though nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

Yeah. I hope no one’s taken our seats, Nancy said.

They rushed out, making the elevator door stop. Nancy always liked to sit three rows up, in the centre. It was where she and Anna had sat for the last three years of school.

A sense of relief flooded her when she saw the seats were still unoccupied. They sat. Nancy pulled out her notebook and pen, while Anna grabbed her phone and tapped out a few last minute texts.

The professor was already at the front of the room. Bent over as he was, staring down at some papers, she could see his shiny bald spot.

It was only after the lecture started that she noticed the guy from the elevator. He’d sat down in the row ahead of Nancy, right in front of her.

Before she knew it, the professor called for a mid-lecture break.

After a few moments, she began staring at his back. The lines of powerful, well-defined muscles were apparent under his shirt. He was muscular without being muscle-bound. He sat in a way that at once took up the most space possible while trying to refrain from notice.

What are you hiding from? Nancy wondered.

It was as though he’d heard her thoughts. Nancy went rigid in her seat as he turned around to look at her. All she could see were those blue eyes. They were her universe. All sound, touch, taste, and smell had gone. Only she and his eyes seemed to exist.

Then there were his lips. They moved, forming shapes, words.

    Ouch! Nancy whispered.

Anna had trodden on her foot after noticing that Nancy had zoned out again. What? Nancy hissed to Anna.

Anna looked pointedly at Nancy, then glanced forward.

Following Anna’s line of sight, Nancy saw the boy again. He watched her patiently.

    Yes? Nancy said.

Do you have a spare copy of the course outline? He asked.

Nancy desperately shifted through the papers she’d printed out for class. There wasn’t a spare.

Yes, actually, I do, she said.

She pulled out her own copy of the outline and handed it to him. He smiled as he accepted it. She felt surprise that he didn’t, in fact, have fangs.

After the lecture, Nancy and Anna jammed themselves back into the elevator. They got off on the ground floor. Anna immediately headed for the food court, but stopped when she noticed Nancy wasn’t following.

You coming? I desperately need some espresso after that, Anna said.

But Nancy wasn’t even looking at her friend. She’d caught a glimpse of a black head of hair moving with a throng of people toward the bookstore. She remembered that there was something she needed in the bookstore, but not what.

No... No... I need to get to the bookstore before the line gets too big, Nancy said.

Text me when you’re done! Anna called after her retreating form.

Nancy tapped her foot at the entrance while the security guard checked her bag. She practically tore it from his hands as he gave it back.

Inside, she wandered around through the metal shelves. There were little white cards that had various names of books and course codes on them. For once, she found herself not complaining about the incredible mark up on prices.

Where did he go? Nancy thought. When she noticed an employee looking at her funny, she grabbed a random book from the shelf beside her and pretended to leaf through it. When she looked down at it, she noticed she’d picked up a senior-level physics text. She dropped it back onto its shelf as though it had been covered with spiders.

    When she
