    Introduction

My inspiration for writing this book to help Artist Vendors was brought about by many years of traveling around participating and also being on the organizing committees for different arts and crafts shows and festivals.  I have participated in such shows as an artist vendor, a non-artist vendor, a volunteer and for several years as a chairman of a festival committee.

In fact, I have taken part in Arts and Crafts shows in various capacities for over two decades in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.  I have also visited Arts and Crafts shows as an observant customer in numerous other States over the years, as I have traveled around.  I have a personal love for a traditional Arts and Crafts show, and feel it is an important part of North American Culture, even though I have also visited such shows in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom in my travels abroad.

As crazy as it sounds, I once participated in a three day weekend selling books on the streets of New York City as part of a sales training program.  I can tell you there is no better place in the world to experiment with huge volumes of people than in the Big Apple.  One can literally see thousands of people in a day, and it never slows down.

In the course of being actively engaged and observant of Arts and Crafts shows over the years, I began to separate the good from the bad, and even the ugly in terms of vendor mistakes, especially the huge ones that just leave one scratching ones head saying 'Really? You did that?' or ‘You are doing that? And you paid how much for this booth?’

As with any business, there is a measure of success and an amount of failure as one makes mistakes and sometimes pays a painfully expensive tuition.  Sometimes being an artist vendor is a bit like the blind leading the blind, as inexperienced people jump into the business and consult other inexperienced people, and ultimately lose a lot of money and get a bitter taste about the business, their art work and even customers.

Failures build upon failures, and many a talented artist loses their passion and ambition for success simply because they did not have anyone directing them on how to make good business decisions, and become a success as an Artist Vendor.  One survives as an artist by selling ones creations, and learning some business secrets of success.  If one does not learn the skills to do this effectively, ones art or craftsmanship never leaves the realm of being simply an expensive ‘hobby’.

So I thought it might be a good idea to share some ideas on what successful artist vendors do, and offer insight into steps that a new artist vendor might take to make their journey more success than failure.

This book is entirely drawn from my own experiences, and I do not expect to cover every single possible successful action or scenario in this one book.  As with any writing experience, what one author considers important may not be at the same level of importance to another author or reader for that matter.  One should always seek out multiple viewpoints on any subject one studies, and this book is no exception.

I have endeavored to offer ideas that I have seen proven to be useful, and also ones that I have seen others use even more effectively than myself.  Some of these ideas you might discover you are already doing, and others I hope you will find are new and fresh and will become helpful to you in your arts and crafts vendor business.

It is my sincere desire to see all arts and crafts show vendors prosper and achieve success.  I have always had a warm spot in my heart, as well as a profound respect for those that make this their living.  They are free in their travels from show to show, and they meet all kinds of people in many different regions selling their artistic creations.  It is a life not without toil, and challenges, but a life surrounded with beauty and creation that one cannot help but admire.

I considered in writing this book that if I perhaps can help make the life of an artist vendor easier, this wonderful slice of any culture of any nation will continue for the next generations to come. Arts and Crafts shows are a rich and vibrant part of any countries culture, and those that participate in them as artist vendors are some of the most dynamic and resilient people you can ever meet.  They make a living out of selling their own artistic creations fueled with imagination, and of that there can be no more exciting endeavor.  Their very existence brightens the lives of so many people they come in contact with as their beautiful art is taken into the homes and lives of the people who buy them.

It is my sincere hope that the information I present here in this book will be of use, and result in the future prosperity of those who avail themselves of it.  Some of the best friends I have ever made have been my fellow artist vendors at arts and crafts shows.  So with this book I raise a glass of ambitious dreams and hope, and say ‘Cheers’ to your continued success!
