DESIGNER PROFILE Anna Maria Horner

Can you give us a bit of background about how you first got into fabric design?

Having grown up with all things sewing and handmade, my first work after art school was a five-year stint of designing and making a clothing line called Handmaiden, together with my mom. I gradually shifted over to product design partnerships to alleviate the investment and time involved with creating a collection of goods from the ground up. Most of my early surface and textile design work was in the giftware industry, creating the art for stationery, tablewares and the like. This freelance process had me exhibiting my art annually for a few years in New York City at a trade show called Surtex. In 2004, Donna Wilder (the founder of FreeSpirit Fabrics) walked by my booth and decided that perhaps I could contribute something to her then newly-formed, artist-focused fabric brand. Perhaps she was right!
