    Preface

Golf is the greatest game in the world. We can play it for our entire lives, and it helps foster many of our closest relationships with friends and family. I have been honored to be a part of this game for nearly my entire life. I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

It is a great thrill to finally be able to provide this collection of gems to the golfing public. It is something I have wanted to do for quite awhile. But it is much more than a book for me; it represents a collection of memories and experiences that I will forever cherish.

This book would not have been possible without the help and influence of many others. Foremost are my students, for providing valuable feedback which has shaped many of my theories on the long game and short game. I have also had the opportunity to play with some of the best golfers in the history of the game, as well as work with some of the top instructors the game has ever known. I have learned incredible amounts from each and every experience. This book is for them.

    FULL SWING GEMS

    Tempo Myth

There is no one perfect tempo. Every player in the world--from the Tour player to the high handicapper--has a different and unique tempo.

Tempo is the most individual aspect of the swing, and should never be altered. It is the glue that holds all the pieces of your swing together. If you start applying super glue to where you originally had generic school glue, your swing will be thrown out of sync. This will definitely affect your mechanics, and poor shots will result. The key with tempo is keeping it natural and consistent.

Most people feel that a slow tempo is best. How many times have you seen a player hit a bad shot and someone say, Slow it down! They are not only referring to that player's swing speed, but also to his tempo.

This can be harmful advice. Now, granted, it certainly depends on what is being referred to. If someone is told to slow down the spinning of the hips from the top of the swing, then that might be okay. Being too quick with the hips can lead to an over-the-top downswing and a poor shot. However, if someone is told to slow down the overall tempo and speed of the swing just because he hit a bad shot, then that could be an issue.

This focus on a slow tempo has adversely affected average players. Their determination to achieve a slow, beautiful, rhythmical swing has made many of them swing too slow. The swing speed of the average player is about 15-mph slower than that of a Tour pro.

If anything, swing harder, quicker, and faster than ever.

    Backswing Wide, Downswing Narrow

When you look at a good player's swing from the face-on view, the swing shape you will find most common is one that is wide, then narrow, then wide. That is, the backswing will be relatively wide, the downswing will be more narrow, and the follow through will again be wide.

    Think wide, then narrow.
