CHAPTER 1: THE PARTY
TONY’S HOUSE: JUNE 6, 1986
The summer of ’86 started out like any other summer in our small town of Monticello, which was located in Southeast Arkansas. Some people would even joke and call it L.A., which meant Lower Arkansas.
Tony Baxter had been my best friend since birth and we were like brothers. Tony’s parents were away on a four-day motorcycle trip riding Harley’s to Memphis. School had been out for a week now and we hated to think about going back for our Junior year. Since we had always had parties at Tony’s when his parents were away, we decided that this would be the perfect time for our first party of the summer.
We started the night out cruising for girls in my black 1977 Trans-Am with David, Mac, and Bobby tagging along. We made the usual circle around town with AC/DC blasting out of my Pioneer speakers.
We talked to a few girls and some more friends from school and told them we had a keg of beer and would be having a party at Tony’s house. After about an hour we were back at Tony’s house priming the keg as a couple of cars were already pulling up. The party got out of hand as usual, for what started out as seven or eight friends drinking beer soon became a full blown party with just about everyone from age 13 to 33 showing up and drinking anything that had alcohol in it. Pot smoke filled the air like a dust storm in Phoenix, and after the keg was dry the party died.
Bobby was never one that could hold his liquor and was so drunk he had pissed his pants and began to show his ass by exposing his little weenie to what few girls were still there. Tony was madder than hell and he demanded that Bobby leave. Bobby said, Kiss my ass Tony Baxter, I ain’t going nowhere
! Tony pushed Bobby and Bobby took a swing at Tony and missed. Tony pushed Bobby again and Bobby ran out of the house with Tony on his heels.
Bobby ran to his truck and reached under his seat and came up with a hunting knife about ten inches long. Tony told Bobby, If you cut me, you better kill me, because if you don’t, I’m kicking your ass
! Tony asked Bobby to give him the knife. Bobby was so drunk he just stood there staring Tony in the eye and swaying back and forth. Finally, Bobby threw the knife to the ground, which stuck in Tony’s boot.
Tony pushed Bobby back against his truck seat and hit him about seven or eight times in the face with his fist. Bobby left Tony’s house cussing us all and bleeding from his nose and mouth as he smoked the tires on his old Dodge truck while backing out of the driveway.
The sun was coming up, so I headed home. My mom was up drinking coffee and asked where I had been all night. I told her I had spent the night over at Tony’s. She wasn’t pissed at me or anything, but she gave me the usual, call me and let me know where you are
routine.
I went on to bed and right in the middle of my dream
