(The Fever)

Our daughter needed a few day’s rest from the strain of our vacation.

That was how Lori’s stepmother, Jennifer, referred to Lori’s stay in the various hospitals.

How the doctors who took care of Lori during that time referred to the first five days of that two-week ordeal was as a viral induced coma where her body temperature hovered between 104.5 and 106.9.

Their first vacation together as a new family had been to a tropical resort where Lori’s father and the new stepmother spent most of their time in the areas of the resort that were classified as being for the adult population only, while Lori was restricted to PG-13 activities. Of course if she had complete freedom, she would have avoided the white sand beaches where ancient people were rumored to parade around nakey. Also the bars and clubs where guys older than her father would be trying to pick her up. In the lobby of their hotel an ex rock star whom she had to google to know who he was had been tried to invite her on a trip with his band to Spain. Her father had been present and he had while tugging the guy’s chick like hair back whispered something in the guy’s ear that sent him running for his life out of the hotel lobby.

What Lori found was that a limited range of options where it came to having anything that resembled fun which lead her to taking the advice of the resorts recreational director to go on a relaxing hike along the mountain trails at the center of the island. Adding at the time that there was no need to worry about the volcanoes they had not been active in years.

A hot and steep hike that was populated by people who bore the same, what have I gotten myself into, expression on their faces that Lori wore.
