Theoretical side of happiness, unhappiness, suffering, misery and sorrow, etc.
Advocating happiness or pleasure principle in life has the recorded history in Indian Charvakas and Western Epicureans, Hedonists, etc. These people, schools of philosophic thought, have given theoretical dimension to caveman's idea of eat, drink and be merry with some qualifications and nuances. In simple terms, and for the common man it is just that: eat, drink and be merry.
Any celebrations round the world, cutting all cultural lines are organized for eating, drinking and being merry meaning dancing and having fun in their immediate cultural setting. Similarly, in other cultures and languages, the expression is meat, wine and women. Eat meat, drink wine and dance with, and enjoy women. Now the concept of happiness from time immemorial to the now is clear by the above expressions and phrases. It is basically food, drink and sex. Of course this is of physical plane. But it serves as the foundation for more subtle and higher levels of enjoying life with happiness.

Happiness in physical plane is universally practiced and understood. Every culture in every land around the Earth organize these provisions as and when occasion arises. These basic pleasures have their basis in the child. The child begins his pleasure with food and drink. It is personal pleasure set in socially pleasurable context.
