THE GOOD AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL FOOD GUIDE

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RIGHT DIET

A correct and balanced diet for your American Cocker Spaniel will result in an active, healthy pet with a lovely, shiny coat. The American Cocker Spaniel will have little trouble maintaining its ideal weight, provided it is given lots of opportunities for adequate exercise. An unhealthy or unbalanced diet can result in a brittle, dry coat; lack of energy; overall poor health conditions; poor growth; and even permanent muscle and bone growth deficiencies. Understanding the basics of a good diet for your American Cocker Spaniel, as well as how to understand and read dog food labels, is essential in getting just the right balance for your canine companion.

Feeding an American Cocker Spaniel is much different than feeding a person. Many owners believe that American Cocker Spaniels require a variety of different tastes and types of food in their diet, just like humans enjoy. The reality is that American Cocker Spaniels are very satisfied with eating the same type of food every day, and changes in food are actually more harmful than helpful to the American Cocker Spaniel.

Another myth with regards to feeding is that American Cocker Spaniels are strict carnivores or meat eaters. In reality they are more closely aligned with omnivores, or those animals that eat both meat and vegetables and other organic materials. Many of the vitamins and minerals that American Cocker Spaniels need are found in whole grains and vegetables. There are some compounds included in dog food that have absolutely no nutritional value and are placed there just to act as fillers or to bulk up the food. While they don’t directly harm the pet, they do result in a bloated appearance to an American Cocker Spaniel’s stomach as well as an increasing amount of waste material. Sometimes these diets that are very high in fillers can be the leading cause of gastrointestinal problems with American Cocker Spaniels, such as excessive gas, diarrhea, or constipation.

Finding the right diet for your American Cocker Spaniel takes a lot of research and a bit of trial and error. Veterinarians, breeders, and dog trainers may provide assistance or make recommendations on the type of food that you should provide for your American Cocker Spaniel. No matter who makes the recommendation, if the food is not agreeing with your American Cocker Spaniel or you notice it is refusing to eat the food for more than two or three days, consult your vet and
