THE GOOD BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG FOOD GUIDE

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RIGHT DIET

A correct and balanced diet for your Bernese Mountain Dog will result in an active, healthy pet with a lovely, shiny coat. The Bernese Mountain Dog will have little trouble maintaining his or her ideal weight, provided he or she is given lots of opportunities for adequate exercise.

An unhealthy or unbalanced diet can result in a brittle, dry coat, lack of energy and ability to attend, as well as overall poor health conditions, poor growth, and even permanent muscle and bone growth deficiencies.

Understanding the basics of a good diet for your Bernese Mountain Dog, as well as how to understand and read dog food labels, is essential in getting just the right balance for your canine companion. Feeding a Bernese Mountain Dog is much different than feeding a person. Many owners believe that Bernese Mountain Dogs require a variety of different tastes and types of food in their diet, just like humans enjoy. The reality is that Bernese Mountain Dogs are very satisfied with eating the same type of food every day, and changes in food are actually more harmful than helpful to the Bernese Mountain Dog.

Another myth with regards to feeding is that Bernese Mountain Dogs are strict carnivores or meat eaters. In reality they are more closely aligned with omnivores, or those animals that eat both meat and vegetables and other organic materials. Many of the vitamins and minerals that Bernese Mountain Dogs need are found in whole grains and vegetables. There are some compounds included in dog food that have absolutely no nutritional value and are placed there just to act as fillers or to bulk up the food. While they don’t directly harm the pet, they do result in a bloated appearance to a Bernese Mountain Dog’s stomach as well as an increasing amount of waste material. Sometimes these diets that are very high in fillers can be the leading cause of gastrointestinal problems with Bernese Mountain Dogs, such as excessive gas, diarrhea, or constipation.

Finding the right diet for your Bernese Mountain Dog takes a lot of research and a bit of trial and error. Veterinarians, breeders, and dog trainers may provide assistance or make recommendations on the type of food that you should provide for your Bernese Mountain Dog. No matter who makes the recommendation, if the food is not agreeing with your Bernese Mountain Dog or you notice he or she is refusing to eat the food for more than two or three days, consult
