INTRODUCTION
People who feed raw food to their dogs know that feeding their beloved animal raw food is the way nature has intended it. It is this type of food that closely replicates a dog’s diet in the wild. This diet is most often called all natural
because raw food is usually free from preservatives, fillers, animal byproducts, additives and chemicals.
Some dog owners opt to feed their dogs big meaty bones while other owners don’t. There are those who believe too that it is natural for dogs to eat fruits and vegetables while others think otherwise. Raw dog food diet usually includes lamb, pork, chicken, turkey, rabbit, kangaroo, quail, salmon and organ meat, fresh vegetables and fruits. Included as well are eggs, flax seed, yogurt, and kelp.
Raw food feeders know that this kind of diet preserves the enzymes and amino acids in the food, making them easy to digest. As a result, dogs have strong immune systems that protect them from diseases and allergies. Dog owners who give raw food generally observe improvement of their pet’s over-all health and appearance. Many have also reported increased reproductive capacity and longevity of their dogs. Dogs who are fed raw food also usually have healthier teeth and gums, strong jaws, shoulder and neck muscles as a result of chewing all those raw meat.
However, not every dog owner is convinced of these beneficial effects of feeding raw food to their dogs as some of them are concerned about the dangers posed by food-borne illnesses due to salmonella and E. coli bacteria. Some dog owners also refuse to believe that a dog can get balanced nutrition from raw food alone.
If you are considering changing your dog’s diet from processed dog food to raw, see first your veterinarian and ask if this is suitable for your dog, and also try to visit a dog owner friend or a dog breeder who has been feeding raw food diet to their dogs. Observe how the diet has affected the dogs and if indeed their overall health is excellent.

Chapter 1 – Raw Food Diet
It should not be surprising to anybody that there are many differing opinions about the right diet for a dog. There are those who would exclusively feed commercial dog food, and there are others who prefer making their own pet food. Even within the raw feeding community, there are different beliefs that exist. Are dogs carnivores or omnivores? Your answer will determine whether you will agree to feed an all raw meat diet or a mixed diet of meat (including bones and organ meat), vegetables and fruits.
There have been recalls in the past of commercial dog food. The most serious one occurred in September 2007. It was prompted by reports of many pets dying of renal failure. Government investigators determined that the substance melamine caused the contamination of the affected pet foods. The public responded by calling for the government to impose strict regulation on pet food manufacturers. These incidents have pushed many dog owners to think twice about giving processed commercial dog foods to their four-legged family members. Concerned dog-owners are starting to seriously consider raw food feeding as an alternative to conventional, manufactured dog food.
Many dog owners find it best to resort to raw feeding when their dogs were diagnosed with allergies. However, there are those who are already proactive in feeding raw food when they started to raise dogs. They see the benefits of feeding this type of diet when a dog is ill and so they know this diet will also benefit their dogs when they are in good health.
While raw food adherents have multiplied and many pet food manufacturers started to offer
