Cats are notoriously picky eaters. While cats do enjoy a varied selection of food and should be fed both dry and wet foods, canned cat food has the advantage of a high water content, which helps to keep your kitty hydrated. Most cats don’t drink much water, so it’s important for them to “eat” their fluids.

A study published in 2011 showed that when cats are given access to foods of different protein, fat, and carbohydrate concentrations they tend to self-select a diet that provides them with around 52 percent of their calories from protein, 36 percent from fat, and 12 percent from carbohydrates, explains veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Coates.
