It looked like another long night on the job for Alexa and Lana as they settled into their desks for the graveyard shift at the National Networks and Computing helpdesk. As the weather seemed pretty clear, chances are they weren’t going to be answering a lot of calls; however, it was difficult to tell how things would go. The two women waved to each other from across the room. They were the only two people working that shift unless eminent weather was approaching. This meant that, most of the time, they were on their own. Of course, they were practically chained to their desks in case calls or emergency e-mails came in, making it impossible for them to physically visit each other. Fortunately, that didn’t stop them from endlessly texting from their phones.

Alexa turned on her computer and logged into the company system. They also had Internet access, but it was strictly monitored for business-related purposes only. That was fine with her, though. She and Lana both had cellphones, helping them cope with the occasional, yet inevitable boredom. They also got a dinner break, but were forbidden to take it simultaneously as someone needed to attend to the job’s duties. Generally, they would eat at their desks because there simply weren’t many choices at their disposal. Needless to say, the local iHop got lots of business from these two women.
