Chapter 1

Ally Whitton looked in the mirror of the room where she’d spent half her childhood. The walls were no longer pink, a princess blanket no longer covered the bed and the toy box was long gone. But this was the room her best friend Sarah inhabited for their childhood, and where Ally slept over every other weekend. Sarah Hale slept at the Whitton house the other half of their childhoods.

Ally was staying here for a couple days, by the grace of Sarah insisted her dad open the spare bedroom. Ally had a job interview in their home city, but since her parents and brother no longer lived in town, she had nowhere to stay. The company would have paid for a hotel room, but Sarah was unrelenting. Ally was never good at saying no, and Mr. Hale rarely said no to his only child.

Mr. Logan Hale waited downstairs for her to join him for supper. He had takeout from somewhere; she didn’t know. Or care. Her nerves left her without appetite. Ally wasn’t good at talking face to face in general, and even though she’d known Mr. Hale for most of her life, she’d always had a crush on him. Not that she would ever tell Sarah. Most of Sarah’s friends lusted after him, and they made it known. But Ally kept hers hidden. Mr. Hale was handsome and even though he must be almost fifty, he looked better than she remembered. And his voice was deep and welcoming, but mostly he was kind.

She rubbed the sleeve of her oversized sweater over her face. It was summer outside but Mr. Hale’s air conditioning kept the house chilled. Cold enough that she could pretend she wore a sweater to keep warm, but what she needed was to hide.

In bare feet, like the old days, she descended the ten stairs from the bedrooms to the main living area. Mr. Hale was a bank manager or something, and their house was huge. Her parents weren’t poor, but nothing like what Logan Hale had. Not only a huge house, but a pool meant once she learned to swim she spent most of her summer here.

I wondered if you fell asleep. I wasn’t sure if I should knock on your door or not, the warm, mature voice soothed her anxiety. It helped that his back was to her.

Sorry, I got caught up on my computer. You could have eaten without me.

That wouldn’t be polite.

Well, getting lost in my computer wasn’t polite either…

He turned around and her breath caught. She wanted to brush the silver hairs at his temple and see if there was as soft as the dark hairs surrounding his face. He stared at her, as if he was having similar thoughts. She rubbed her sleeve over her face again to wipe the idea from her mind. Mr. Hale saw her as the shy five-year-old his daughter adopted from the corner in kindergarten where Ally cried about missing her mom.

Here I dished up your food. Do you want to eat here or at the dining table? He gestured to the island where two stools were tucked under the ledge.

Here is fine, she said. She usually ate at her computer desk which was why she needed a new keyboard every other month, between crumbs and the occasional dripping sauce she destroyed them quickly.

I usually eat here. Company is rare. He looked sad as he spoke. Sarah’s so busy with her wedding and work. I should sell the house, but I have too many happy memories of you girls here.

Ally nodded. "I understand. Well, thank
